Elk Mound track and field chalks up two more big finishes at Mondovi

MONDOVI — It almost seems like the Elk Mound track and field teams just needed the fresh air and great outdoors to spread their wings in 2017.

The Mounder boys won their second outdoor meet this season with a 174-point performance, while the girls took second place behind Neillsville/Granton after scoring 143 points at the April 13 Mondovi Invitational.

[emember_protected] Noah Zurbuchen, Brady Redwine and Rian Flynn kicked things off for the boys’ team with 20 points after finishing first, third and fifth respectively in the 100m dash. Zurbuchen ran a 11.09 race, while Redwine finished in 11.67 and Flynn raced across the line in 11.91.

Redwine then clocked a 24.74 to take fourth in the 200m dash behind Neillsville/Granton’s Isaac Bryan (23.30), Dominick Cappadora (23.84) and Mason Barth (23.90). Senior Hunter Johnson won the boys’ 400m dash with a time of 54.02.

Cade Hanson continued his streak of placing in the top three when he won the 3200m race with a time of 11:24.87. Hurdler Jake Johnson extended his win streak, taking first in both the 110m and 300m hurdles with times of 15.35 and 41.29.

The Elk Mound boys’ won every relay but the 3200m one, where they took second behind Altoona.

In field events, Tyler Brantner cleared 5-08 in high jump to tie for third with EC Regis’ Justin Zweifelhofer. Mondovi jumper Hunter Evans won on his 6-02 attempt.

Chandler Schreiber’s 12-00 vault nabbed him first place in the event, while freshman Gaelen Young cleared 9-06 to take third. Brantner jumped 18-09.25 in long jump to earn third in the event, and Conner Mavis and Marquis Kasakaitas placed second and fourth in discus with distances of 120-03 and 101-11 respectively.

On the girls’ team, Alana Plaszcz took second in the 800m race with a time of 2:46.80, which was nearly eight seconds behind first-place finisher Karen Scharlau of Cochrane-Fountain City. Kirstin Martinson and Plaszcz twin sister, Brook, went one-two in the 1600m run, with Martinson finishing in 6:21.85 and Plaszcz running a 6:22.90 race.

Victoria Fasbender then picked up another top-three long distance finish when she took second in the 3200m behind Cochraine-Fountain City’s Paige Alleman. Fasbender finished in 13:37.17, while Alleman ran a 13:04.17 race.

Junior hurdler Hannah Cedarblade took second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.99, having been bested by Kayla Lis of Neillsville/Gilmanton’s 17.69 race. Cedarblade turned the table on Lis in the 300 hurdles, winning the race in 52.92, while the Neillsville runner finished in 53.59.

The Elk Mound girls placed third in the 400m relay after running the race in 58.62. Neillsville/Granton’s team took first with a 55.45. The distance runners picked up third in the 3200m relay after finishing in 11:35.42. Cochrane-Fountain City took top honors there with a time of 11:13.47.

Senior Kaitlyn Baier earned second in girls’ pole vault after clearing 7-00. Willow Eisfeldt of Neillsville/Granton took credit for the win with her 8-06 vault. Brynn McVey placed second in triple jump with a distance of 31-00.00, which was five inches behind event winner Kristi Springer of Altoona.

Mikayla Solberg won the girls’ discus throw, and Kassie Jain took third. The senior pair had distances of 97-11 (Solberg) and 84-04 (Jain).

Neillsville/Granton’s girls’ team took home the team win after scoring 178.

The Mounders got back on the track right away after the Easter break, competing at Eleva-Strum April 18, before going to New Richmond April 20. They are scheduled for an April 25 meet in Chippewa Falls.
