ELK MOUND — Elk Mound’s golf coach, Brandon Powell, has a simple set of goals for his team this year.
“Our statistic goal is to try to not have any scores over 50 on the varsity level,” the Mounder coach explained. “Our goal as a team is to get into the top half of the conference in the final standings.”
One season after going winless in the Dunn-St. Croix, and not sending anyone to the sectional meet, Powell and his Mounder golfers are hoping to make a bigger impact. The team lost only one senior to graduation in 2016.
Colin Svee was last year’s lone senior. Powell remembers him as a great leader, and excellent teacher for the short game.
This year’s senior, Jameson Rubenzer, can probably empathize. He will hold down a leadership spot as Elk Mound’s elder statesman. Powell counts Rubenzer as a strong player, and is eyeing two of his sophomore players as strong contributors who will fight for varsity spots.
Juniors Nathaniel Schrieber, Lexi Schindler and Emily Bartig are hoping to cop varsity spots this season, which leaves only one spot open on the varsity team.
Dillon McLaughlin and Maxwell Marquardt are likely to duke it out for the remaining varsity space this season. The duo will be hitting the links with classmates Colton Ward, Marcus Kinblom, Teddy Pahl and Kaitlin Schiferl in 2017.
Powell also sees freshmen Ethan Rubenzer and Isaac Sell as newcomers with some potential.
The Elk Mound coach believes his golfers will be good off the tee, and be in good position to set up second shots, but has some concerns once the ball is off the fairway.
“We have to get better around the green, and on the green, if we are going to reduce our scores,” Powell indicated.
The Mounder coach sees Spring Valley, Mondovi and Glenwood City as the conference leaders in 2017. He noted all three schools have strong programs, and he expects them all to be in the top half of the conference.
This is Brandon Powell’s second year as head coach at Elk Mound.
The Mounders will open their season with an April 6 “away” match hosted by Colfax at the Whitetail Golf Course, before heading to Mondovi’s home course on April 10. The team will meet up with the other conference schools again April 13 at Spring Valley.
