Minnesota man killed in Town of Spring Brook UTV accident

TOWN OF SPRING BROOK — A 19-year-old man from Lake City, Minnesota, was killed in a utility terrain vehicle accident in the Town of Spring Brook southwest of Elk Mound May 9.

Daniel A. Stokes was trapped under the UTV and sustained extensive trauma to the head and neck, according to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department.

Stokes was transported by Mayo helicopter to Mayo-Eau Claire where he was pronounced dead, the news release states.

The Dunn County Communications Center received a call around 1:36 p.m. last Saturday about a man trapped under an all terrain vehicle that had overturned.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and Menomonie fire and ambulance responded to the scene.

The UTV operator, 20-year-old Spencer J. Miller of Bay City, sustained minor injuries in the accident.

According to the news release from the sheriff’s department, based on the investigation, it appears that Miller was accelerating while making a turn, and the all-terrain vehicle rolled onto the passenger side, trapping Stokes under the side of the Polaris Ranger.

Seat belts were not in use at the time of the accident.

The crash occurred on private property in the Town of Spring Brook on 420th Avenue.

According to the sheriff’s department news release, alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the accident.

A subsequent news release from Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith indicates that no charges are expected to be filed against Miller.

The accident is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and the Dunn County medical examiner’s office.
