GC man arrested for attempted murder

CLEAR LAKE — A 32-year-old Glenwood City man is in the Polk County Jail for allegedly trying to kill a 77-year-old rural Clear Lake man Friday evening.

According to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, September 25, at 6:09 p.m. deputies responded to a rural Clear Lake address for an attempted homicide of an elderly victim. The victim had blunt-force trauma and edged weapons wounds.

The victim was able to fight off the attack and protect himself with a shotgun and fired a shot, but did not strike the suspect. The suspect, Duane Smith, Jr. of Glenwood City is believed to have been under the influence of a controlled substance, fled the scene.

Deputies put out an attempt to locate on Smith and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office and Glenwood City Police quickly located Smith and took him into custody without incident.

Polk County Sheriff, Brent Waak said that it was a savage attack on the victim who was airlifted to Regions Hospital and was in stable condition as of press time. The incident remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The Polk County Sherriff’s Department was assisted by the following agencies: The Clear Lake Ambulance, Clear Lake Fire, Life Link Air Ambulance, Glenwood City Police and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office.
