The Elk Mound volleyball team started their conference season off on a positive note with a pair three set wins, starting with the Spring Valley Cardinals 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 Sept. 16, then two days later rolled over the Elmwood Raiders 25-10, 25-9, 25-13.
Morgan Polden led the Mounders on offense with 11 kills and Elly Friberg and Hannah Flatness both contributed with six each. Leia Kufahl and Dayna Kotecki set their teammates up all night with 15 assists apiece, Kotecki scored points on six service aces and Serena Wieser played a solid back row, digging the ball up 11 times and Friberg collected eight digs. Friberg also had three solo blocks while Polden had two.
Polden and Wieser slammed eight kills each in the win while Flatness collected six. Kotecki led the Mounders in assists with 18, Kufahl added nine and Friberg had half of the team’s service aces with three. Defense was a key as the Mounders finished with 43 digs in the three sets with three different players picking up seven. Friberg also led the team in blocks with five.
Elk Mound continues conference play at home Tuesday, Sept. 23 against Glenwood City, then travels to Mondovi Sept. 25.
