HAMMOND — A blaze that consumed a motor home caused a brief traffic back-up along interstate 94 near Hammond while firefighters extinguished the flames August 17.
The Wisconsin State Patrol arrived at the scene of the fire around 10:30 am that morning after receiving calls of a motor home on fire on the shoulder of the eastbound lane of I-94 at mile marker 14.7, about one mile west of the Hammond exit.
The unit was fully engulfed when troopers arrived and eastbound traffic had to be shut down due to the intense fire and dense smoke obscuring drivers’ vision in both eastbound lanes of traffic.
The United Fire Department was on scene within a few minutes and one of the traffic lanes was reopened at 10:43 a.m. The second lane of traffic was reopened at 11:12 a.m.
Traffic was backed up for several miles while the fire department extinguished the fire.
Traffic was not rerouted during the incidence.
The fire department did not locate any occupants in the motor home and the driver of the motor home has not yet been located said the State Patrol in its new release.
The motor home is a total loss.
