Deer Park woman dies in 3-wheeled motorcyle crash

A Saturday afternoon ride this past weekend turned deadly for a passenger on a three-wheeled motorcyle.

Charlene Kastens, 79 of Deer Park, has died from injuries she suffered after being thrown from a trike on which she was a passenger. The driver of the motorcycle, Robert Kastens, 88 also of Deer Park, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle motorcycle crash near the intersection of USH 63 and 180th Ave in Erin Prairie Township at 12:27 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014.

According to a news release from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, a 2102 Honda Trike GL 1800, driven by Robert Kastens, was southbound on USH 63. At the intersection of USH 63 and 180th Ave., the vehicle entered the south west ditch. Both Robert and his passenger, Charlene Kastens, were ejected from the motorcycle. The couple was transported by New Richmond Ambulance to Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, MN.

Charlene Kastens later died at Regions Hospital as a result of her injuries. Mr. Kastens suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Kastens were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The Sherriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by New Richmond Fire and EMS, New Richmond Medics, Deer Park Fire and First Responders, and the Clear Lake Fire Department.

This is St. Croix County’s fourth traffic fatality of 2014.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office.
