St. Croix County crash claims life

One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash occured on US Highway 63/State Highway 64 late Thursday afternoon, November 21 in the St. Croix County township of Cylon.

25-year-old Rolando Ontiveros-Contreras of Clear Lake, a passenger in a 2000 Honda Civic driven by Isrrael Romos, 33, also of Clear Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner’s Office. He is the 12th person to die on St. Croix County roads this year.

The accident occurred on US Highway 63/STH 64 about a quarter mile east of 240th Street around 5:24 p.m. November 21.

A report from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office stated that evidence at the scene indicated that Romos’ Honda Civic was westbound on USH 63/STH 64 when it crossed the center line and was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound Chevrolet Suburban operated by Daniel J. Dittman, 46, of Menomonie.

Following the crash, the Honda came to rest in the south ditch while the Suburban stopped on the south shoulder of the road.

Weather conditions appear to have been a factor as it was snowing at the time of the crash and the roadway was reported to be slippery.

Romos was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN by New Richmond EMS with serious injuries. Dittman was evaluated at the scene by New Richmond EMS and released.

The Sheriff’s report stated that all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by New Richmond EMS, Deer Park Fire and First Responders, the Clear Lake Police, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
