Child dies in snow plowing accident

STAR PRAIRIE — A four-year-old boy died as the result of being run over by a pickup in a snow plowing accident in Star Prairie Township on December 11.

According to a news release from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department, deputies and EMTs were dispatched to 1071 238th Avenue for a report of a four-year-old child that had been struck by a vehicle.

The investigation indicated that Daniel Fitgerald had intended to plow the driveway at the family’s home. Fitgerald’s son, Collin, had asked to play in the snow-fort that his parents had built for him while his father plowed snow. Daniel watched as Collin made his way to the Snow Fort in the front yard. Daniel then started plowing.

Daniel noticed an area in front of the garage of the home that had snow built up. He pulled partially into the garage and then backed up, using his snowplow to pull snow from the front of the garage. It was at this point that Daniel noticed blood on the snow and as he looked closer he realized that Collin was injured.

Daniel immediately called for help and attempted life saving measures. Collin was transported by New Richmond EMS to Westfield’s Hospital, but was pronounced dead.

“This is one of the most tragic events that anyone could ever have to deal with, this is an accident by all accounts, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fitgerald family,” said St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts.
