Toppers, Bulldogs compete in SCC Invitational
HAMMOND — Competitors not only had to deal with weather but construction at the annual St. Croix Central Track and Field Invitational last Thursday in Hammond.
A major construction project at St. Croix Central High School that included portions of the competition areas, meant that there was no long or triple jumps, discus, shot put or pole vaulting events at the April 7 event.
Coupled with cold, windy and wet conditions made for challenging circumstances but area athletes from Boyceville and Glenwood City persevered.
The Glenwood City boys, behind a strong performance from its sophomore members, finished in a tie for fifth with Somerset at the 12-team meet. St. Croix Central ran away with boys’ title piling up 115 points in a winning effort. Prairie Farm and Ellsworth finished a distant second with 47 points followed by Elmwood/Plum City at 44 and then the Hilltoppers and Spartans at 39 points.
In the girls competition, the title went to St. Croix Falls with a score of 75. Right on the Saints heals were host St. Croix Central (71), Baldwin-Woodville (69) and Prescott (66) as a mere nine points separated the top four finishers. The Boyceville girls tallied 28 points for eighth place and the Glenwood City gals took tenth with 19 points.
Glenwood City
Backed by strong performances in a couple of relays and from several sophomores, the Topper boys were able to parlay their efforts into a fifth place showing.
The boys’ 4 x 200 meter relay team ran to a first-place finish while the 4 x 800 meter squad copped fifth.
In the individual competitions all of Glenwood City’s points came from sophomores.
Darian Multhauf led the way with a second in the 100 meter dash after he ran a :11.99.
Ethan Kahler scored in both hurdling events, taking third in the 110 meter highs (:17.99) and fourth in the 300 intermediates.
Jacob Nelson also placed fourth after finishing just a tenth of a second behind Multhauf in the 100 meters. Riley Schutz placed eighth in the 1,600 m.
For the girls, three of their five scoring events came in relays. The Lady Toppers took third in the 4 x 200 m, fourth in the 4 x 800 m, and eighth in the 4 x 100 m races.
Senior Gabby Peterson and sophomore Elizabeth Wink added a pair of individual sixth-place finishes in the 100 meter and 400 meters competitions.
Boyceville
Junior Cassie Malean scored in both the high jump and 100 meters to pace the Lady Bulldogs in Hammond. Malean tied for the best jump at 4′ 11′ but finished second based on tie-breaking criteria in the high jump and was fourth in the dash after running the 100 meters in :13.84.
Shiann Wagner was the girls’ other individual placewinner as she took third in the 3,200 meter run. The finishing time of 13:47 was a personal best for the sophomore.
The girls also placed in three relay events. Boyceville’s girls were third in the 4 x 100 m, seventh in the 4 x 200 m and eighth in the 4 x 800 m.
For the boys, junior Kiel Anderson and sophomore Rian Corr placed fourth and fifth in the 3,200 meter run. Tyler Krueger came in fifth in the 110 meter high hurdles and Sam Retz was seventh in the 1,600 m.
The 4 x 400 m relay team were fifth.
“Last year our stronger performances were in the field (events),” said Boyceville head coach Corey Day. “It was nice to see points scored on the track.”
Day gave kudos to his girls relay teams especially the 4 x 100 meter squad.
“The girls’ 4 x 100 m (team) consisting of Carlee Schultz, Erica Sempf, Ireland McAbee-Thomas and Cassie Malean finished a strong third and have the potential to push for the school record.”
