BHS Science Olympiad finishes second at UW-RF

RIVER FALLS – The Boyceville Science Olympiad program placed second in the small school division at the UW-River Falls Border Battle High School Science Olympiad tournament this past Saturday. The team also earned the Spirit Award, voted on by event supervisors recognizing students and coaches that have a positive attitude, exemplify teamwork, have respect for the rules and their fellow competitors, and exhibit sportsmanlike conduct. Boyceville medal winners were as follows:
Gold medals were earned by the following:
• Juniors Zoey Hellendrung and William Engel in Electric Vehicle
• Sophomores Devon Lee and Brooke Fenton in Helicopters
• Seniors Emily Fetzer and Delaney Olson in Horticulture
• Lee and sophomore Sawyer Garbe in Towers
Silver medals were earned by the following:
• Sophomores Eleanor Farrell and Brady Rasmussen in Disease Detectives
• Olson, Hellendrung, and junior Chelsi Holden in Experimental Design
• Juniors Karen Schaff and Loralie West in Geocaching
• Engel and Hellendrung in Helicopters
• Garbe and sophomore Isabelle Konsti in Horticulture
• Schaff and sophomore Kade Phillips in Optics
• Hellendrung and Holden in Towers
• Eighth grades Clayton Score and Easton Lange in Wind Power
Bronze medals were earned by the following:
• Lee and Garbe in both Electric Vehicle and Geocaching
• Senior Aidan Madison and junior Lexi Cole in Helicopters
• Fenton and sophomore Nautika Valdez in Towers
Fourth place medals were earned by the following:
• Holden and Engel in Air Trajectory
• Lange and Score in Geocaching
• Sophomore Anna Hafermann and West in Geologic Mapping
• Rasmussen and Phillips in Robot Tour
• Sophomores Ava Dormanen and Emily Jackson in Horticulture
“Our students did an outstanding job at a very challenging tournament” said head coach Andy Hamm. “I was particularly impressed with the resilience of our team as they did not back down when things did not go as expected. The team kept working hard and doing their best to finish as high as possible in every event, and this resulted in a great team score.”
Boyceville HS will next be in action at the University of Michigan Invitational on February 15th while the MS team will be next in action at the regional tournament at home on Saturday February 8th. Boyceville Science Olympiad is coached by Andy Hamm, Russ Riehbrandt, and Tony Pelikan.
