Track and field teams compete at conference meet in Mondovi

MONDOVI – With the state competition less than two weeks away, that means tournament season has begun for the track and field teams.
Both Glenwood City and Boyceville competed in Mondovi last Tuesday, May 20 for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference Meet.
The Glenwood City boys’ team placed highest on the day with a third place finish and 100 total points. The Bulldog team finished eighth with 59 points.
As for the lady athletes, the Toppers placed fifth with 80.5 points and the Bulldogs followed in sixth with 56 points.
On the track for the Toppers, Sam Melendrez finished in second in the preliminary 110 meter hurdle race. He finished third in the finals with a time of 17.35, which was a personal best. Todd Petersen edged him out in the finals with a time of 17.15.
Melendrez highlighted himself in the further distance however as he took the top honors in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.10.
In the 100 meter dash, Isaac Tuttle ran a 11.53 to qualify and then he finished with an 11.29 in the finals for second place. Charlie Shackett ran a fairly tight race to him again with an 11.97 for fourth.
Both ran a solid race in the 200 meter as well. Tuttle finished in second with a 23.22, which was a personal best. Shackett followed in third with a 23.83.
Both Tuttle and Shackett were a part of the winning 4×100 meter relay team. They along with fellow seniors, Nick Mrdutt and Jeff Kopacz ran a 45.65 for first. Colfax was the closest with a time of 46.73.
The boys’ strongest event in the field was the long jump with Mrdutt placing third with a distance of 19’ 5.25”.
As for the Lady Toppers, they excelled on the track once again in not only individual events, but team as well.
The 4×800 meter relay team and the 4×200 team both placed second and both finished with their personal best times.
The 4×800 was completed in 10:25.77 by Morgan Kadinger, Kaylie Scalze, Kaitlin Konder and Taylor Drinkman. In the 4×200, Kayla Bloss, Gabby Peterson, Maya Petersen and Macie Rasmussen ran a 1:56.59.
The 4×100 meter team also finished in second, which was ran by Bloss, Rasmussen, Peterson and Kadinger in 54.51.
Individually, Kadinger had a personal best time in the 800 meter run with a 2:36.23, which landed her in third place.
The best individual performance on the track for the girls went to Drinkman. She placed first in the 3200 meter run out of 11 competitors with a time of 13:06.37.
In the field, it was Rachel Klatt that took the top finish. She was first in the shot put with a throw of 35’ 4.25”, which was also a personal best for her.
On the Bulldogs team, the ladies led overall and their top finisher was Cassie Malean. She placed first in the high jump for the second straight week with a height of 5’ 2”.
Malean also placed in the top ten in the 100 meter dash with a fifth place spot by a time of 13.91.
Also finishing in fifth on the track was Abbey Bird in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:41.33.
She then excelled in the long distance with a second place finish in the 1600 meter by a time of 5:48.59. Elizabeth Fasbender of Elk Mound won by just a few strides as she finished with a 5:48.511.
Bird also led the girls 4×400 meter relay that placed third overall. She along with Sandra Knorr, Danielle Nelson and Malean ran a 4:36.04.
On the track for the boys’ team, it was the 4×800 meter relay team that placed the highest. They finished in first after Brandon Malean, Tanner Johnson-Hetchler, Mitch Pustol and Ian Kane ran a 9:05.57. Elmwood/Plum City was the closest with a 9:09.27.
Johnson-Hetchler also finished near the top of the 3200 meter event. He placed third with a time of 10:43.23.
Bryor Hellmann also recorded a third place finish after he time of 44.55 in the finals of the 300 meter hurdles. He competed in the 110 meter hurdles also and placed fifth with a 18.29.
In the field it was McAbee-Thomas who highlighted for the team. He placed second in the triple jump with a 42’10.75”. He was out jumped by Spring Valley’s Zac Webster who had a 45’ 6.5”.
Freshman Tyler Krueger had a solid day in the pole vault with a height of 10’ 9”, which put him in third. He improved by a foot in less than a week as he jumped 9’ 0” at home last Thursday.
Both teams had the Regional Meet on Tuesday (May 27) night in Boyceville. The Sectional will be this Friday, May 30 in Colfax.
