With a five-game losing streak at their backs and consecutive games versus the conference’s top two basketball squads coming head-on, the Boyceville girls were in desperate need of a win when they began last week’s three-game road trip in Eleva-Strum Monday, January 22.
The long trip to Eleva-Strum High School proved well worth it as the Bulldogs picked up their first victory in nearly three weeks!
Playing in a doubleheader with their boys’ team last Monday, the Boyceville girls turned a slim two-point halftime lead into a 42-34 win over the Cardinals. The boys also won their game.
The thrill and elation of victory proved short lived. Just 24 hours later, Boyceville lost 59-40 in Colfax. That was followed three days later by a 61-35 drubbing at the hands of unbeaten and stated-ranked Elk Mound.
The 1-2 effort leaves the Bulldogs with a 1-9 mark in Dunn-St. Croix games and a 7-12 record in all contests.
Boyceville will have a chance to pick up its second conference win of the year when it plays the winless Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City in Plum City this Thursday. The Bulldogs knocked off the Wolves 47-25 back on December 19 for its lone conference victory. The Bulldogs will then return home next Tuesday, February 6 to host rival Glenwood City in the annual “Coaches versus Cancer” game.
Eleva-Strum
Getting just enough offense and a solid defensive effort, Boyceville was able to beat host Eleva-Strum 42-34 on its home court January 22.
“We played great team defense to get the win,” stated head coach Jay Lagerstrom.
Freshman Aubrey Malean scored half of the Bulldogs’ 18 first-half points. Ellie Engeman added a three pointer and seniors Cora Leslie and Hannah Dunn each tossed in single baskets as Boyceville went into intermission with a two-point advantage.
Dunn came out of the break with a “hot hand”, throwing in a dozen points on a triple, three deuces and a trio of free throws to lead Boyceville to a 42-34 win.
In that second half, Boyceville got scores from Sarah Stoveren, Chelsi Holden and Zoey Hellendrung as they outpointed the Eleva-Strum 24 to 18.
Dunn finished with 14 points to lead all scorers. Malean hit just one second-half basket and finished with 11 points and added six rebounds and four steals. Stoveren led with eight rebounds and added six points. Holden, Hellendrung and Engeman each tallied three points.
The Bulldogs continued to struggle at the line making just seven of 17 charity tosses and had a trio of three pointers.
Avery Glenz and Aliza Kulig each scored 11 points to top the Eleva-Strum charts.

Colfax
Even with the Vikings’ leading scorer, McKenna Shipman, on the bench for the entire game due to an injury suffered in pre-game warm-ups, Boyceville could not keep pace with Colfax when it visited Tuesday, January 23.
The Vikings jumped off to a 14-1 advantage. The only point the Bulldogs came up with was a free throw by Sarah Stoveren early in the streak.
After Boyceville’s Aubrey Malean sank a bucket, Meadow Keltner found her range with back-to-back triples for a 20-6 lead while Hannah Dunn connected for the Bulldogs from behind the arc.
Dunn was doing her best to keep the Bulldogs in the game with three more long balls in a span of a few minutes, but the Vikings carried a 37-18 halftime lead into the locker room
Cold shooting by both teams early in the second half didn’t produce a lot of points early on but the Vikings managed to pull ahead 42-23.
Five Bulldog points cut the Colfax lead but another run put the Vikings up by 20 points at 51-31 before Dunn broke the streak with two free throws.
Colfax committed their seventh team foul with around nine minutes left and their tenth with close to three minutes to go, allowing Boyceville to visit the free throw line several times, but it wasn’t enough to gain on the Vikings.
Dunn led the Bulldogs with 17 points which included four of the team’s six triples. Aubrey Malean hit double digits as she finished with 13 points. The Bulldogs were 14-for-21 from the foul line but committed several turnovers in the contest.
Autumn Niggemann was the leading scorer for the Vikings with 11 points which included 3-of-4 triples. Sierra Shipman added nine points with five rebounds and three assists. The Vikings were 8-for-10 from the charity stripe and 7-of-17 from behind the arc. They turned the ball over just five times in the contest.
Elk Mound
Senior Sarah Stoveren netted a pair of three pointers and a two-point hoop to account for eight of Boyceville’s ten first-half points when it played in Elk Mound January 26.
That was a far cry from the tally that the unbeaten and state-ranked Mounders put on the scoreboard in that opening half.
For all intents and purposes, the game was over at half with Elk Mound well in front 44 to 10.
The Bulldogs did score more in the second half after the Mounders dialed back their pressure and substituted liberally.
Although Boyceville scored 25 in the final 18 minutes to Elk Mound’s 17, the final score read 61-35 in the Mounders’ favor.
Aubrey Malean scored a pair of threes and a hoop in the latter half to finish with ten points along with Stoveren. The Bulldogs also got a three from Jaden Stevens and Hannah Dunn to finish with six in all. Boyceville took just ten fouls shots, making six.
Four players finished in double digits for Elk Mound. Allie Roder tallied 14, Ellie Schiszik, who had all three of the Mounders’ triples, finished with 13 points and Allie Robel and Hailey Meyer both scored ten.
