MADISON — Boyceville’s Easton Retz can now call himself a state champion!
Retz claimed the boys’ born in 2013-14, 85-pound state championship at the 2022 Wisconsin Wrestling Federation’s (WWF) Kids Folkstyle State Championship held this past Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26 at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum in Madison.
Going a perfect 5-0 to win the gold medal, Easton Retz secured four of those wins via first-period pins including a 41-second fall of Jett Hemp of Neillsville-Granton-Loyal in the championship match.
A pair of Bulldog teammates also garnered medals at this year’s state youth wrestling tournament.
Treylyn Heinz went 4-3 in the boys’ born in 2011-12, 75-pound weight class to place sixth.
Owen Tuttle also claimed a sixth-place medal as he finished his tournament with a 3-3 mark in the boys’ born in 2009-10, 150-pound weight bracket.
Five other Boyceville youth grapplers competed at state.
Jordy Cassellius went 2-2 in the boys’ born in 2013-14, 54-pound weight class; Owen Christopherson was 1-2 competing in the boys’ born in 2011-12, 87-pound weight class; Lexton Benitz finished 3-2 in the boys’ born in 2009-10, 91-pound weight class; Cole Retz split his four matches going 2-2 in the boys’ born in 2009-10, 140-pound weight bracket; and Zach Hellendrung compiled a 4-2 mark while wrestling in the boys’ born in 2007-08 division at 190 pounds.
