SAFE AT HOME — Glenwood City pitcher Gavin Janson lost the ball as he tried to tag out a diving Trett Joles of Boyceville at home plate. It was three games and three more wins for the Bulldog baseball team last week as they outscored their opponents 39-4.
The week started with a 12-2 win over their neighbor Glenwood City May 24, then followed up just a day later with a 14-2 tromping over Elmwood/Plum City. After moving the game up a day because of possible poor weather conditions, they finished the trifecta with a 13-0 whitewashing of Colfax at home May 26.
The three victories took Boyceville’s D-SC record to an unblemished 10-0. The Bulldogs are 12-0 overall with four games remaining all of which are conference contests. Boyceville should face some better competition this week when they travel to Spring Valley June 1 and Mondovi June 4. The Bulldogs return home next Monday, June 7 to host Elk Mound and will conclude the regular and conference seasons in Durand on June 8.
The WIAA Division 4 playoffs begin on Thursday, June 10.
Glenwood City
As usual, the Bulldogs scored early and often, starting with a two spot in the first inning. They followed up with four more in the second, then gave up a run to the Toppers in the top of the third.
Both teams tacked on single runs in their next at bat putting the score at 7-2 for the Dogs, and they opened it up with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.
Brady Helland threw all five innings to earn his second win of the year. He gave up seven hits and one base on balls and struck out three Toppers.
Trett Joles, Walker Retz, and Jacob Granley continue to pound the ball with Joles going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring three times, Retz also banged out three hits with a home run in four at bats knocking in four runners and scoring once. Granley was 2-for-2 with his own round tripper with two runs scored and two RBIs.
“After having two games cancelled last week because of weather issues, it felt good to get back on the field again,” Boyceville coach Michael Roemhild said. “I thought Glenwood City improved at the plate since the last time we played them. They put the bat on the ball but for the most part our defense was able to back Helland up. Offensively, we really ran the bases well and capitalized on Glenwood’s mistakes. We had 10 hits as a team and swiped eight bases, which showed our aggressive base running,” he added.
Elmwood/Plum City
Although they whaled on the Wolves 24-1 just a few weeks ago, this game went the full seven innings before the Bulldogs finished it off.
Up just 4-2 after three innings, Boyceville used a five-run, fourth inning to go up 9-2. Five singles, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch allowed Braden Roemhild, Joles, Conner Sempf, Trevor Hollister, and Granley to cross home plate.
They added single runs in the fifth and sixth and three more for good measure in the seventh for the 12 run win.
Joles had a trio of hits with a double and scored three times, Retz smacked two doubles with four hits and four RBIs while scoring twice, and Chase Hollister slammed a two bagger and picked up a couple of RBIs. Roemhild had two hits with an RBI, Ira Bialzik brought three runners home with a hit and scored once, and Nick Litomsky picked up an RBI.
Trevor Hollister threw the first five innings and whiffed nine batters with four hits and Granley pitched the last two innings and struck out four Wolves and allowed one hit.
“We were able to stay aggressive on the base paths, swiping ten bags,” coach Roemhild said. “I thought for the most part we had a good approach at the plate. Defensively we had a couple of errors that put a little life back into E/PC but we were able to work out of them,” he added.
Colfax

TOUCHING HOME plate after launching a three-run homer was Boyceville senior Walker Retz (right). Waiting to congratulate Retz was fellow teammates and senior Connor Sempf (#12) and Trett Joles (#24). Although the Vikings were on a three-game win streak, this wasn’t much of a contest as the Bulldog pitching staff held them to just three hits while striking out 12 in the five inning game.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were smacking the ball all over the field to the tune of 13 hits and playing errorless ball on the defensive side.
After leading 4-0 after three innings the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs against three different Colfax hurlers. Joles scored twice in the inning and was joined by Sempf, Retz, Trevor Hollister, Granley, Bialzik, Dawson McRoberts, and Roemhild.
Sempf, Retz, and Trevor Hollister all had a trio of hits, Retz brought in five runs and slammed a home run, Granley had a two bagger and knocked in two runs, and Sempf crossed home plate three times.
Sempf picked up the win giving up three hits in four innings and whiffing nine Vikings and Chase Hollister finished the game, striking out three batters with no hits and one walk.
“We had only three plays to make in the field so it was a pretty uneventful day for our defense,” coach Roemhild said. “Our base running has been really improving which is a nice thing to see,” he added.
