We at the Glenwood City Senior Center are so happy to be finally giving out the 2020 awards to the top three boys and girls for our annual intergenerational essay contest. And to be able to do the 2021 at the same time.
We would like to recognize Glenwood City Elementary principal Betsy Haltinner for all of her help with organizing the ceremony, which was held Wednesday afternoon, May 12 in the elementary gym, at this busy time of year for the school.
The essay contest is one of the things the Glenwood City Seniors look forward to every year. We normally host the 5th grade class at the community center for the presentation of awards but due to the pandemic we were unable to do so last year.
Glenwood City is the only St. Croix County Senior Center who still does the essay contest and we plan on doing it as long as we can.
The 5th graders have amazed me each year that I’ve been here with their good manners and behavior during the presentation. Every one has always said please and thank you when they were getting their juice and cookies. That is not always the case anymore, so I find it so refreshing to see such well mannered youngsters.
In 2020, the 1st Place boy, Gus Kohler is the grandson of our delivery driver Russ Kohler so we were quite pleased when he won! No cheating involved either.
I am so looking forward to next year, my great granddaughter Addy will be a 5th grade Glenwood student then. I am trying not to push her into writing about me.
Betsy Haltinner and her staff deserve much credit for the help in getting the presentation to happen. And I want to congratulate all of the 5th grade students from 2020 and 2021, and their teachers for their participation in our project.
Senior board president Alfie Schrank and secretary-treasurer Marge Quale made the presentation of awards. Each winner received a certificate plus a cash award with $10 going to the first-place winners, $7.50 to second and $5 to third. All participants were also given a gold dollar coin.
