WELCOMING A NEW MEMBER to the city council—Mayor John Larson, right welcomes Randall Ketola to his seat at the City Council table. Ketola was elected at the April 6th election. Also being returned to the Council were Ben DeGross and Austin Sandow.
GLENWOOD CITY — The City Council received some good news at their monthly meeting of April 20th. The news was in the bids they received for the demolition of the old school along East Oak Street, they came in much lower than the estimate.
Greg Adams with Cedar Corporation out of Menomonie presented the council with results of the bidding for the demolition work and informed the council that Cedar had received nine bids for the work.
Albrightson Excavating, Inc was the low bidder with a bid of $232,610.00. Other bids ranged from $277,000.00 from a firm out of Waunakee, WI to a bid from a Beloit, WI firm of $838,465.37. Cedar Corporation’s estimate was $385,000.00. The council accepted the bid from Albrightson Excavating.
Adams told the council that the work of removing the former school would be completed by the end of October. The city has already spent $15,000 to purchase the property plus another $134,775.00 for asbestos and hazardous material removal, plus the engineering costs.
In other council action, this being the organizational meeting of the council, Mayor John Larson gave each member their committee assignments and asked for a nomination from the members as to who will be Council president. The current president Rob Unruh, who was not present at the meeting, was nominated for the position.
Public Works Director David Caress spoke to the council about the current work being done on State Highway 170 in the community. He said the contractor is currently cutting in new handicapped ramps in the sidewalks and that work should take about two weeks and then milling of the surface of the road should begin in June. Caress also noted that work would begin at the swimming pool.
Police Chief Robert Darwin reported about work that had been done to one of the squad cars and that the front seat on the 2014 unit has been repaired. He also informed the council about a $10,000 grant the department has received.
Darwin also reported about a major domestic case involving a gun and that a juvenile faces drug charges.
The mayor also noted that the paper work has not yet been completed on the property exchange with Tyler Doornink to allow for the new Municipal Building to be built, and that bid openings for that project will be April 29th.
City Clerk/Treasurer, Sharon Rosenow reported that bid opening for the safe room at the fairgrounds should be in June.
The council, after a public hearing was held. Approved the vacating of the most easterly 100 feet of East Elm Street.
Committee appointments
Mayor Larson appointed members of the Council to standing committees and the chairperson of each committee is as follows:
Public Works chairperson is Austin Sandow. Public Property and Equipment committee is led by Randy Ketola. Ben DeGross will be the chair of the Public Safety committee.
Steve Lee will chair the Public Finance and Personnel committee while the Public Utilities committee is chaired by Rob Unruh, and Ken Peterson will lead the Public Relations and Community Development committee.
Members that will serve on the Board of Review for 2022 are Ben DeGross, Steve Lee, Randy Ketola, and John Larson.
