February may be a short month, but is certainly a busy one.
We announced the winners of the Groundhog Shadow guessing contest on Monday. Paula Standaert was the winner for the residents, and we had a 6-way tie between the staff for winner. They were Melissa Moe, Jill Darwin, Chris Humphries, Kate Adler, Christa Clark, and Lexi Wannemacher. We threw their names in a hat, and Jill Darwin won the big prize, and the rest got a smaller prize. Thanks to everyone who participated, both staff and residents, and to the residents for letting me draw their shadows. It’s always a fun activity. Much more challenging when you don’t get to see everyone for quite some time.
We had church on Youtube on Tuesday, and Pastor Jonathan came in and did some visits downstairs. I’m sure that was great for members of his congregation.
Several family members also came to visit this past week, which put big smiles on the residents’ faces!
The beautician was able to come upstairs this week, and we were going to try out our new chair and hair dryer in the spa room instead of taking everyone downstairs. Well, being this is 2021, there was also a glitch in that process, as she found out the chair that was ordered, and was supposed to recline, did not do so. So we are in the process of fixing that issue. The fun never ends!
Bingo, which is for sure the most looked-forward-to activity, was played on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, so all households were covered. We have gotten some more donations from Paula’s family for prizes.
Friday was both our Valentine celebration and Chinese New Year. So we served egg rolls, fortune cookies, and Valentine cookies. Quite a combination, right? We didn’t want to wait until Monday because that is President’s Day, and residents always enjoy identifying the president’s pictures, and hearing some interesting facts about them. We also have Mardi Gras coming up next week, and Lent begins. Like I said, February may be the shortest month, but it is certainly one of the busiest.
As things turned out on Friday, we couldn’t gather for the crowning of our King and Queen, so we did them separately in their rooms. Our new Queen is Ruth Huber, and our King is Ken Carlson. It was a pretty tight contest. We certainly hope there will be a Rustic Lore Parade for them to participate in this year.
Gladys Best celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday. She had a nice visit with her family via Zoom. Residents were treated to birthday cake for their lunch dessert. Happy Birthday, Gladys!
All the residents, tenants, and the entire Glenhaven community appreciate all of you who took the time to send Valentines and treats to the residents. They got surprises every day this week from someone. It was wonderful! We live in a great community. Happy Belated St. Valentine’s Day to you all!
