The first week of the new year wasn’t kind to the Bulldog girls’ basketball team as it dropped the first three contests of the year.
Boyceville started 2021 off on the wrong foot, losing to Turtle Lake on the road, 29-48 on Tuesday, January 5th. And it didn’t get any better for the Lady Bulldogs when they hosted the Dunn-St. Croix’s second-place team the Vikings from Colfax on Thursday, January 7th, who slayed the Dawgs 29-66. Then the very next evening, Friday the 8th, the girls traveled to the league leader, Durand, where the Panthers chewed them up and spit out another defeat for the Dawgs by a score of 27-73.
The Lady Bulldogs, who are still looking for their first conference “W” slipped to 0-5 in Dunn-St. Croix play and 2-6 overall, traveled to Elk Mound on Tuesday, January 12th and will host Elmwood/Plum City on Friday, January 15th before traveling to Colfax next Monday, January 18th. The Bulldogs will take a break from conference play to host Baldwin-Woodville on Tuesday, January 19th.
According to head coach Jay Lagerstom, the girls worked hard and defensively they played better but they just weren’t hitting their shots. As a result, Turtle Lake took a 27-11 lead at the end of the first half.
The second half was much closer with the Bulldogs scoring 18 points to Turtle Lake’s 19.
Kady Grambow led the Lady Dawgs in points with 13 which included going four-for-five from the line. She also had 16 rebounds for the night.
Despite the loss, Lagerstrom is staying positive stating, “We keep working hard to find scoring opportunities and the girls’ work ethic and attitudes are great.”

The Lady Dawgs finished out their week by playing the top two teams in the Dunn-St. Croix conference.
On Thursday, it was the second-place Vikings who gave them trouble. Although Coach Lagerstrom stated that they played very hard against them. He thought that the first half against the Vikings was probably the best half of basketball that they have played all year.
With 1:13 left on the clock in the first half, the Lady Dawgs were down by just five points, however, Lagerstrom admitted that they lost their composure and ended up going into the locker room down by twelve at 18-30. Lagerstrom blamed himself for not taking another timeout before the half to slow the Vikings.
The Bulldogs started the second half strong again but just couldn’t maintain the intensity with their small squad.
“Their depth and speed wore us down,” said Lagerstrom of the Vikings. “[Our] Starters lost their legs and working hard with masks on just seemed to catch up with them, the girls coming in off bench played well but most of them have a whole game of JV under their belt too so fatigue sets in pretty quick also.”
The second half had the Vikings outscoring the Bulldogs 36-11.
“The girls showed good discipline with the ball the first half and rebounded real well….we need to find a way to carry that play deeper into games,” noted Lagerstrom.
Kady Grambow led the Bulldogs in both rebounds with eleven and points with nine.
Colfax finished with 13 three pointers to just four by Boyceville.
Lagerstrom concluded, “Playing quality teams like we are in this stretch can be tough but it should help make us better.”

On Friday, the Lady Dawgs took on the first-place Panthers of Durand. After a tough game against the Vikings the night before, the Bulldogs just didn’t have much left in them to make it competitive and were soon out of their element.
Lagerstrom summed up the Durand game saying, “We didn’t come out at the start ready to handle their pressure and athleticism and we completely got out of our game plan. I don’t think we had our legs under us after playing Colfax the night before and the early deficit just snowballed on us. We turned the ball over way too much against a really good team and that’s a pretty good recipe for a result like we had.”
The Panthers took a 39-14 lead into the locker room and came out in the second half and scored almost as many points with a 34-13 lead in the second half for an easy 73-27 victory.
Lagerstrom tallied eight to lead the Bulldogs with Grambow adding six. Durand had 11 players score points in the 46-point victory.
