Despite the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic and the need for social distancing, family and friends have found creative ways to visit their loved ones and celebrate important milestones such as birthdays.
That was no different for a pair of residents on the Glenhaven, Inc. campus in Glenwood City who recent celebrated birthdays.
Birdie Moe turned 92 on April 23 and Doris Herdahl celebrated her 95th birthday on May 3 and although family and friends of both ladies were unable to gather close they honored their loved ones with a surprise parade.
With decorated vehicles, banners and balloons, the children and friends of Birdie Moe held a parade around the driveway circle at Havenwood Assisted Living on Friday, April 24 in honor of Birdie’s 92nd birthday which was the previous day. The event was hosted by five of her seven children including Rita Cassellius, Roger Moe, Brian Moe, Linda Zevenbergen and Mary Patt Weeks. Another daughter, Jean Hoppe of Florida, was unable to attend and son Bob Moe is deceased. By the smile on her face, Birdie thoroughly enjoyed her 92nd birthday celebration.
Then a little over a week later, on Sunday, May 3rd, the family of Doris Herdahl hosted a surprise birthday party for her at Glenhaven. The cars lined up bearing signs, balloons, and excited partygoers. As vehicles loaded with family and friends filed by, they sang and even had a great-great-granddaughter play happy birthday on her trumpet. Doris turned 95 that same day. One group of friends did the song on kazoos coming from the Herdahl’s former church of Little Elk Creek. All these well-wishers truly lifted the spirits of Doris and the whole party, as she has been quarantined since March 10th, unable to even leave her room.
