Lady Dawgs pluck Cardinals, sunk by Vikings; raise over $12,000 for cancer research

The Lady Bulldogs were one and one this past week in a pair of conference games as they defeated the Spring Valley Cardinals on the road February 11 but lost to the Colfax Vikings at home on February 14.

Boyceville outscored host Spring Valley 40 to 22 in the second half of last Tuesday’s contest to win its fourth D-SC game of the season, 66-40.

But the Bulldogs found no solace at home last Friday when conference champion Colfax played in the Dog House. While the Bulldogs stayed close in the first half, trailing only by five points at the intermission, the Vikings shifted their offense into high gear for the second half and put in 38 points to just eight by the hosts in a 54-19 Colfax rout.

The Lady Dawgs, 7-13, hosted Amery on Monday, February 17th and will finish out the regular and conference seasons this Thursday the 20th when they host the Mounders from Elk Mound.

The Lady Bulldogs will open the WIAA Division 4 tournament at home next Tuesday, February 25 after earning the number seven seed in the upper half of the Colfax Sectional bracket. Boyceville will welcome #10 Cumberland, who is 4-15. The winner will play at Unity on Friday, February 28.

Spring Valley

Despite being down in numbers, the Lady Bulldogs pulled off their fourth conference win when they defeated the Spring Valley Cardinals by 26 points on Tuesday, February 11th.

Head coach Jolene Bird stated, “Overall, a good win for the team.”

According to Bird, the Bulldogs had some early foul trouble which was a concern already being without Kady Grambow for the evening. Even with this foul trouble the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Cardinals in the first half by a score of 26-18. Faith Harnish came off the bench for the Lady Dawgs in the first half to give them some quality playing minutes.

Boyceville led 26-18 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Dawgs got some help from bench player Harper Olson who knocked down a couple of three pointers and played well.

The Bulldogs had a big second half scoring 40 points to the Cards 22. The result was victory for the Bulldogs with their biggest margin of the year with the final score 66-40.

Emma Ouellette was the leading point getter for the Dawgs with 18 points with Jensine Boesl right on her heels with 17 while Ana Evenson put up ten.

Colfax

Besides being Valentine’s Day, it was also the Lady Bulldogs’ 10th annual “Coaches vs. Cancer”  event when they played the Colfax Vikings on Friday the 14th. While the cancer event was a huge success and well attended, the Lady Bulldogs were not successful on the court as they lost 19-54.

It was a low scoring first half with both teams missing shots to start out. Later, the Vikings took their time, setting up for the perfect shot.

It was just over three minutes into the game before Bulldog Mya Lagerstrom drove the paint for the first two points of the game. The Vikings then went on a ten-point run before Jensine Boesl hit for two at the seven minute mark. A short time later it was Boesl again for two with an assist from Emma Ouellette. The Vikings then countered with two from outside the arc to take a 16-6 lead.

With under two minutes left in the first half, Ana Evenson hit a baseline three pointer. The only three pointer for the Bulldogs all night. Then with just 13.1 seconds left Ouellette hit both ends of a one-and-one to pull within five points of the Vikings at 11-16. This is the way the first half ended as the Vikings missed their final shot of the half.

The second half was an entirely different story as the Bulldogs couldn’t seem to do anything right and the Vikings, who had already secured their ninth conference title in 12 seasons, got hot.

The Vikings full-court press caused the Bulldogs to turn the ball over too many times and helped the Vikings start the half with a 19-point run.

Boesl finally stopped the run at the 10:32 mark when she hit the back half of two free throws.

The Vikings then added eleven more points before Evenson dropped one in under the basket with just under six minutes left to play.

It was during this 11-point run where the game got really rough and several Bulldog players found themselves on the ground with the refs doing little to stop the action.

As play continued, the Vikings added their last eight points of the game and put in all their subs.

The last few minutes of the game were with a running clock. The Bulldogs were able to add five more points but it didn’t help their cause much as the Vikings won 54-19.

After the game, head coach Jolene Bird admitted that they didn’t play well but she told her girls that what happened there tonight was more important in the bigger picture. And what happened was that they raised $12,675.82 for cancer research.
