GLENWOOD CITY — The Board of Education met on Monday evening, November 11, and during the consent agenda accepted the donation of $100,000 from Patricia and Laverne Gust for the Class of 1947 Scholarship.
The donation has been put into a fund at Hiawatha National Bank and will gain 2.5 percent interest, which is a similar set up as other scholarship accounts held at the bank.
“They had wanted it to be no more than ten percent given each year for the scholarship,” said superintendent Tim Johnson. “But we discussed it and will give off the interest from the account so that it is there for a long time going forward.”
The perimeters to earn the scholarship will be set up by the scholarship committee and Johnson believes one requirement will be based on a cumulative grade point average.
On Thursday evening, November 14, the Glenwood City School District will be hosting a civilian response to active shooter event in the high school gym.
“We are going to also hold our safety drill also that day,” said Nicole Brite. “We will be able to discuss what to do during different scenarios as well as review the training for the year that is required by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).”
Elementary principal Betsy Haltinner also added they had mentioned to staff members to record any questions students may have that they do not have an answer for, this way they will be able to find out an answer and get back to the students.
Parents and those in attendance will receive a presentation on the history and prevalence of active shooter events, and will be able to have a better understanding of how to respond and react during an active shooter event.
Chief Craig Yehlik of the New Richmond Police Department will give the presentation that begins at 6 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m.
Yehlik has been with the police department for over 20 years and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is a certified CRASE instructor through Texas State University. He has also been trained in Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response (ALERRT).
There is no charge for the event as it is being offered on behalf of the school district, the Glenwood City Police Department, and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department.
During the committee meeting the board discussed different options in regards to the baseball field and the Career Tech expansions, this was done as a want versus need for the district.
Johnson explained on how Fund 46 has accumulated $1.5 million dollars and how it has been sitting in the fund for the district’s “someday” projects.
According to Lori Klinger the board has asked for more information on the two projects that will be brought up during the December 9 committee meeting at 5:30 p.m.
During the meeting the Board of Education:
• Approved Lisa Lovgren as a support staff substitute.
• Approved Garet Eggert as a Hilltopper Hangtime student worker.
• Approved Todd Johnson as a volunteer boys’ basketball coach.
• Accepted the donation of two trees from Amy and Dan Dopkins – Bobolink Nursery.
• Accepted the resignation of custodian Rochelle Nelson.
• Approved the posting of a full-time custodian position.
• Approved the 2020 8th grade class trip.
