GLENWOOD CITY — Glenhaven’s new administrator, Sherry Goodman, has been on the job for a few months now, she official began her duties on February 4th. Goodman however, has 24 years of experience in long-term care.
Goodman, who lives in Stanley, has been a nursing home administrator for 17 of those 24 years.
“I never intended to get into the nursing home business. It just happened. I needed a job when I moved back to the area and found one at the local nursing home,” Goodman said.
“I was hired as full-time cook, and that is how my career began. I was always wanting to learn more about the different departments, and I would take classes and do the necessary training to get to the next level,” she said.
“I worked as an activity aide and soon became the activity director, working my way to business office manager and later into the role of nursing home administrator. I completed my nursing home administrator training through UW-Madison,” Goodman said.
Goodman grew up in Stanley, and after graduating from Stanley-Boyd High School, moved away to attend Milwaukee Area Technical College to pursue Commercial Art.
“I enjoyed the art scene; however, I was not a fan of big city living and returned to the small town of Thorp, later moving back to Stanley,” she said.
Glenwood City and Glenhaven’s new facility attracted Goodman to the administrator position.
“I liked the small-town atmosphere and the new facility that offers private rooms with household living areas. I liked the idea of working for a non-profit organization that values their community and everyone they serve,” she said.
Goodman is married to her husband, Richard.
“We have three beautiful, intelligent daughters, one in college, one in high school and one in elementary school. My husband is self-employed as a diesel technician at Goodman Diesel in Stanley,” she said.
As one can imagine, with a full-time career, a family and helping with the family business, Goodman does not have very much free time.
“I do enjoy going on tropical vacations and spending time with my family,” she said.
Although commuting from Stanley to Glenwood City and back again every day must take up a substantial portion of time, Goodman does not have any plans to move to Glenwood.
“The thought has crossed my mind; however, the rest of the family is not in agreement at this time. My husband stated that the next time we move, it will be to a place with ocean breezes and the sun,” she said.
When asked if anything had surprised her about Glenhaven or Glenwood City, Goodman replied, “I have been in the business a long time, and there are very few things that surprise me.”
She is, however, pleased and delighted with Glenhaven and the staff.
“Glenhaven is a beautiful building with amazing staff that have compassion to care for others. I truly enjoy my new job and the team at Glenhaven. I’ve very appreciative of the community being so welcoming to me. There is a great sense of pride here, and I’m happy to be part of it,” she said.
Wisconsin has the lowest Medicaid reimbursement rate for residents in nursing homes in the United States, and the low reimbursement rates have left all nursing homes in the state struggling to offer competitive rates of pay to attract Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), registered nurses and other staff.
“Glenhaven Inc. is no different than any other long-term care community in Wisconsin. We are faced with low reimbursement rates and staffing shortages,” Goodman said.
“It is really about how we handle ourselves during these difficult times that will set us apart from the others. We must all work as a team and be supportive of each other and remain positive, because we are all here for the same reason, and that is to provide the very best care to the people we serve,” she said.
When asked about Glenhaven’s challenges going into the future, Goodman said she preferred not to think in terms of “challenges.”
“I don’t want to focus on challenges, rather opportunities that present themselves. We need to be out-of-the-box thinkers and innovators in this industry,” she said.
