HAMMOND — It was a cold, windy and wet day last Thursday, April 4 in Hammond, as the Glenwood City Hilltoppers and the Boyceville Bulldogs competed in their first outdoor meet of the season.
While the all-weather track at St. Croix Central High School allowed the running events to go off without a hitch, wet ground conditions caused the cancellation all field events with the exception of the boys’ and girls’ shot put competitions which were moved inside to the Panthers’ gymnasiums.
“The track meet went very well despite the cold weather,” said Toppers head coach Carrie Blanchard.
The Hilltoppers did not disappoint in their first track and field meet of the year as the girls’ squad finished in fifth place overall with 45 points while the boys tallied 20 points to take eighth.
The Bulldogs, however, struggled throughout cold weather, but continued to have great attitudes as both the girls and boys teams finished in twelfth place.
“Our two best performances of the night were both good enough for a fifth place for Rachel Becker in the 300M hurdles and Nathan Corr in the 3200M run,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Corey Day.

Becker finished the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of :58.03 and Corr ran a time of 11:42.44 in the 3,200 meters for Boyceville.
Taking a first place finish for the Hilltoppers was senior Hadin DeSmith in the 110 meter high hurdles event with a time of :16.86.
In all three of the relay events, the Lady Toppers finished up strong with a second-place finish in the 4×800 meters with a time of 11:59.97, a fourth in the 4×200 meters in a time of 2:03.59 and the 4×100 meters relay race saw Glenwood City cop third place after running a time of :55.53.
“I am really proud of how our athletes competed,” said Glenwood City coach Blanchard.
As for Boyceville’s boys, Dane Wedland posted a top 15 finish with a time of :21.61 in the 110 meter high hurdles while Nathaniel Chich finished in 15th place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.36.
“There is work to be done, but it was a good measure of where the Bulldogs are early in the season,” explained coach Day.
The Bulldogs traveled to Baldwin-Woodville last evening, Tuesday, April 9, and then don’t return to the track until April 18 in Colfax.
Glenwood City was also in Baldwin-Woodville last evening and will make their way back to the track on Friday, April 12 in Mondovi and next Tuesday, April 16 in Clear Lake, weather permitting.
