GLENWOOD CITY — For veterinarian Lesley Szenay, her love of horses has been instilled in her since she was little.
Szenay, who was born and raised in Minnesota, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Veterinary Medicine.
Shortly after graduating in 1992, she and her husband, Nick, moved to Dresser, Wisconsin where they raised their two daughters Lauren and Rachel.
She bred performance quarter horses and knew of Dr. Jennifer Teigen because she has been her reproductive veterinarian for quite a while.
“I had a change in jobs and I had brought one of my mares down here for breeding,” said Szenay. “And Dr. Teigen asked if I wanted to work for her and I said yes!”
Szenay worked most recently for a facility in Osceola for 15 years. The facility closed last March, shortly after she began working for Dr. Teigen at Topline Equine Veterinary Care where she started at just one day a week.
Szenay considers herself an ambulatory veterinarian, while Dr. Teigen focuses on the breeding and the foals, Szenay is going out in the country and taking care of emergencies, spring vaccinations and dentals.
“I had been working here one day a week only and then I decided on March first to go up to working half time, which is three days a week,” Szenay said.
Szenay is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the equine clinic from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
She will keep her schedule to permanent part time, but with the spring season upon us she has worked a little bit more due to it being a busy season for Topline and the veterinarians who are at the clinic.
“I don’t see myself going full time,” she said. “I’m kind of in the retirement stage.”
Her favorite part of working for Dr. Teigen is the ability to talk to and meet all the horse people, along with being able to pass on some of her knowledge to their clients.
“I’ve been involved with horses since forever, my girls were in 4-H and we are still in the program, so it’s nice to see all the progression of the kids growing up with horses,” Szenay stated. “I just love working with the clients.”
Her love of horses and animals is clearly shown on her face as she speaks about her position with Topline and the help she is able to provide to anyone in need.
“I’ve had horses my whole life, and I’ve been around them my whole life,” Szenay explained. “And now I get to focus my whole career around them, I love it.”
Topline Equine Veterinary Care offers several services including routine dental work, vaccinations, help with breeding and even minor surgical services.
