BOYCEVILLE — The Bulldogs drew the battle’s first blood but the Hilltoppers responded with an overwhelming offensive attack that claimed last Friday evening’s inaugural engagement of this season’s “Rivalry War”.
Boyceville scored the first points in the January 4 Bulldog-Hilltopper showdown when Brady Nye canned a three-point shot just 35 seconds into the contest. But Glenwood City responded with 14 straight points and scored 21 of the Dunn-St. Croix boys’ basketball contest’s first 27 points en route to to bludgeoning Boyceville 77-26 to continue last year’s trend where the visiting team won in the host’s home gym.
The Hilltoppers improved to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play where they are currently tied for third place with Durand. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs, now 2-7 overall, lost for the seventh consecutive game to remain in the D-SC cellar with a 0-4 mark and winless since a one-point win over Prairie Farm back on November 29.
Brady Nye’s three-point basket kicked up the hopes of the Bulldogs and their home fans early in the January 4 contest, but Glenwood City pumped in 14 straight points of its own to energize the Toppers team and faithful while dousing the once-bounding hopes of the Bulldogs.
Stepping up for Glenwood City was senior Hadin DeSmith, sinking the first basket of the evening for the Toppers with 14 minutes left on the clock and his first of ten doubles he would net. DeSmith put up a bonus shot to give him a total of 21 points as he led all scorers in the win over the Bulldogs.
A second Nye triple ended the Hilltoppers initial offensive splurge but the GC boys quickly rattled off another seven consecutive points before senior Jaden Reisimer answered with the Bulldogs third trey of the first half making it 21-9.
But the Bulldogs battle to crawl out of an ever-widening deficit was becoming too much as they called their second time out with four minutes left in the first half after a steal from Brendan Sempf led to one more failed shot from outside the paint.
Glenwood City kept its offensive pedal to the floor getting several transition points off of failed three-point shots by Boyceville.
DeSmith netted 16 of his 21 point tally in the opening 18 minutes, all via two-point baskets many coming off nifty drives to the hoop. During that span, teammates Dillon Hiermieler and Brandyn Hallquist sank a pair of threes each while Gavin Janson netted a triple and Tanner Davis scored six points to stretch the Hilltoppers’ advantage to 30 points at the intermission – 47-17.
The Bulldogs’ situation did not improve in the second half as the Hilltoppers opened the final 18 minutes of play with a 19-0 run.
Hilltopper senior Tanner Davis scored three more two-point hoops and a trey in the second half to finish with 15 points. Dan Loring, Ethan Hanson and DeSmith each collected a pair of hoops and Janson added a second three in later half. Hierlmeier, who also finished with 15 points, netted a hoop and two free throws.

Boyceville called the only time out of the second half with six minutes ticked off the clock and down by 36 points. The Bulldogs, however, would not score until senior Seth Wruck netted a three with 8:08 remaining in the game.
But by then, Glenwood City had more than a 40-point lead which had invoked the mercy rule causing the clock to run without stoppage unless a time out was called by either team or an official. Very few of those happened and the timing quickly expired on the Bulldogs to give the visiting Hilltoppers a lopsided 77-26 win.
Jaden Reisimer who went 6-for-6 from the charity line and added a second-half hoop to his trey in the first half, led the way for the Bulldogs with 11 points. Nye finished with six points off the two first-half treys and Brendan Sempf had five for Boyceville. Bailey Danovsky had two points in his minutes played for the Bulldogs.
Adding to the point totals for the Hilltoppers were Brandyn Hallquist with eight points, Daniel Loring tallied four and Gavin Janson finished with six.
The Bulldog’s offense appeared rushed all night especially from the three point range, that allowed a red-hot Glenwood City offense to capitalize and score their highest point tally of the 2018-19 season.
Glenwood City also finished with the advantage behind the three-point arc, netting seven shots to Boyceville’s four. The Toppers were just 8-for-16 at the free throw line. The Bulldogs also sank eight in 12 charity toss attempts.
The Hilltoppers return to the hardwood this Thursday, January 10, with an away game at Elk Mound while Boyceville will play that same evening in Durand. Boyceville will be back home next Tuesday, January 15 to host the D-SC Spring Valley Cardinals. Glenwood City will be in Plum City next Tuesday to face the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City.
