BOYCEVILLE – Cross Country season has officially started for the 2018 season as both Glenwood and Boyceville had runners compete at the Boyceville Alumni Invitational Cross Country meet held on August 23rd at Tiffany Elementary School.

The Bulldog host team fared well with their boys’ team finishing fifth out of a field of eighteen full teams. Lead by sophomore, Nathan Corr the Bulldogs look to be competitive this year. Nathan came in twelfth with a time of 19:29. He was followed by juniors Steven Rasmussen (22nd) and Cade Klefstad (44th). The Chich twins, Samuel and Nathaniel rounded out the top five Bulldogs as they finished 52nd and 56th, respectively.

The Durand Panthers once again dominated the boys’ competition taking first place with four of their runners finishing in the top ten including Issac Wagner in first with a time of 17:18. Ellsworth took second as a team, followed by Clear Lake and McDonell Central.

On the girls’ side, Boyceville had only one runner, Noelle Wheeldon competing so there was no team score for the girls. Noelle finished 79th out of 121 runners.

For Glenwood’s young team the results were less than stellar. The boys’ team finished 17 out of 18 teams with freshman, Thomas Moede leading the way for the Toppers, finishing in 71st place with a time of 22:21. Junior, Elijah Simmons was next followed by Henry Wallin, Brendan Booth and John Hager. The boys only had five runners compete.

The Glenwood girls finished in the middle of the pack in seventh place with eleven full teams competing. Junior, Izzy Williams was the top Hilltopper to cross the line in fourteenth place with a time of 24:04 followed by sophomore Gabby Moede in the 34th spot. Rounding out the top five were Kendall Schutz, Emily Bethel and Samantha Peterson.

Durand was also the winner in the girls division with their number one runner, freshman Madison Sand, winning the race with a time of 21:44. Cameron was second, followed by McDonell Central, Colfax and Somerset.

Corey Day, Bulldog head coach was very pleased as to where his team finished. “I did not think we would finish top five, but I think we have a lot of room for improvement.” He goes on to say that Nathan Corr ran a very strong race.

Topper head coach, Matthew Schutz had this to say about the meet: “Not our best start to a season lately. We probably started off too slow and some of our runners at both levels have to get into better shape.  Being so young, the teams have been so used to upperclassmen firing them up and often setting the expectations for the team.  They will need to figure that part out, step it up, and learn to work as a team.  We ran too much as individuals today.”

The Bulldogs competed at Bruce on Tuesday the 28th. The Hilltoppers and Bulldogs will both be running at St. Croix Central on Thursday, August 30th. The meet is scheduled to start at 5:30pm and will take place at the high school.
