MADISON – The preliminary round was not kind to area wrestlers.
All five Boyceville and Glenwood City wrestlers that competed in the Division 3 prelims, held last evening, February 25 in the Kohl Center in Madison, lost their matches and were eliminated from further competition at the 2016 WIAA State Wrestling Championships.
The preliminary rounds pitted second- and third-place grapplers from the four, D3 state sectionals against one another. The winners advanced to the quarterfinals’ round.
Glenwood City sophomore Jacob Nadeau was the first of the area’s quintet to hit the mats in the Kohl Center Thursday evening where he faced accomplished freshman Macey Kilty of Stratford.
Kilty scored a pair of first-period takedowns to open a 4-1 lead after the first two minutes of wrestling at 106 pounds. She added a reversal and two-point near fall to boost her advantage to 8-1 after two periods of action.
Nadeau took the top position to start the third and final period but was unable to score a point and lost by the same 8-1 count to finishe the year 33-11.
Boyceville’s 120 pounder Dyllon Johnson scored a takedown just 13 seconds into his match with Horicon’s sophomore Bill Condon, who tied it with a reversal midway through the opening period. Johnson got a reversal with 12 seconds remaining in the period but the Horicon’s wrestler worked an escape as the first-period horn sounded.
Condon scored a reversal to take his first lead at 5-4. He was then able to work a cradle on Johnson and pinned the Bulldogs’ sophomore at 3:16.
Dyllon wrapped his second varsity season with a 32-14 mark.
The news did not get any better when James Palmer stepped on the mat for his 132-pound match against Cal Hansen of Deerfield. The Demons’ junior caught Palmer in a head lock and took him to the mat for the pin at 1:15. Palmer finished the year 39-6.
In the next weight class, the Hilltoppers’ second and final state entrant Marcus Ullom took on Princeton’s Ivan Hebbe. In a 138-pound battle of junior wrestlers, Hebbe was the first to score, taking a 2-0 lead with a takedown. Ullom scored an escape to make it 2-1 after one.
But Hebbe took control in the middle period. He scored an escape and followed it with a takedown and three-point near fall at the horn for an 8-1 advantage.
Ullom chose to start the final period in neutral position. Unfortunately, Hebbe scored a takedown with less than 45 seconds left in the match for a 10-1 lead. Ullom worked a reversal with 29 second left but was unable to close the gap further and lost 10-3.
Boyceville sophomore Cody Frederick was area’s final hope for a preliminary round win.
But it wasn’t to be.
Coleman’s Jordan Blanchard scored a 5-1 decision in the 145-pound bout. Blanchard took a 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown. The Coleman junior then added an escape and a second takedown in the middle period for a 5-0 advantage. Frederick’s lone point came late in the final period when Blanchard was hit with a second warning for stalling thereby giving Frederick, who capped the year with a38-6 record, a penalty point.
