Boyceville advances four to state track meet; Glenwood City to send pair plus relay

COLFAX — Area athletes will compete in seven events at this weekend’s state track and field championships in La Crosse.

Four members of Boyceville’s boys and girls teams earned five state berths at the WIAA Division 3 Track and Field meet last Friday, May 29 in Colfax. Glenwood City, meanwhile, will compete in three events after its girls’ 4 x 400 meter relay team won the sectional crown and Rachel Klatt and Todd Petersen qualified in the shot put and high hurdles respectively.

Once again, senior Logan McAbee-Thomas and sophomore Cassie Malean led the Boyceville squads with a pair of first-place finishes in the Colfax sectional meet.

Despite intermittent but light rain, Cassie Malean easily soared to a first-place finish in the long jump. Malean eclipsed her regional leap by an entire foot at Friday’s sectional meet, jumping 16’ 11” for the win. The effort came in the preliminary round and allowed Malean to bypass her jumps in the finals.

Malean will also advance to state in the high jump for a second consecutive year. She finished second in last year’s Division 3 girls state high jump competition. Malean secured the berth with a jump of 4’ 11” which put her in a three-way tie for second. Regis’ Kayla Neff won the event with a leap of 5’ even.

McAbee-Thomas hopped, skipped and jumped his way to the state meet and earned a chance to improve on his second-place finish in last year’s triple jump competition. The Boyceville senior went 42’ 3” in the sectional triple jump to take the gold and bested runner-up Sawyer Rubeck of Fall Creek by eight inches. He was also gunning for a berth in the long jump but fell just three-quarters of an inch short of that goal when he placed fifth with a best of 19’ 11.75”.

McAbee-Thomas also qualified to run in the 400 meters in Colfax but withdrew according to Boyceville co-head coach Corey Day in order to concentrate on his jumping events.

Glenwood City’s lone sectional victory came at the very end of Friday’s meet. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Jennifer Kopacz, Maya Petersen, Gabby Peterson and Morgan Kadinger gave a worthy gold-medal performance as the four members cut 11 seconds off their winning time at regionals to finish first in 4:15.57.

The Topper girls just missed state berths in two other relays races. Both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 meter squads placed fifth. As in regionals, only the top four finishers advance to the state championships.

The 4 x 100 team of Mariah Voeltz, Kopacz, Peterson and Kadinger ran a :52.96 and finished just five one-hundredths of a second out of fourth place. The 4 x 800 team consisting of Kaitlin Konder, Macie Rasmussen, Makayla O’Brien and Morgan Kadinger ran a 10:29.35. The Toppers also finished ninth in the 4 x 200 meter relay race.

Tyler Krueger garnered Boyceville other sectional silver as he vaulted his way into the state meet by clearing 11’ 6” in the boys’ pole vault.

Erica Sempf became the fourth member of the Bulldogs 2015 state track and field contingent when she jumped 16’ 1.5” during the prelims of the girls’ long jump and qualified in third place.

Glenwood City Rachel Klatt earned a second consecutive spot in the Division 3 state shot put field with a second place finish at the Colfax sectional. Klatt, a junior, registered a top throw of 34’ 11” last Friday to take home the silver.

Todd Petersen also earned an individual state berth with a fourth place showing in the boys’ 110 meter high hurdles finals. Petersen cut nearly a half second off his preliminary time and ran a :16.41 in the finals.

Several other area competitors ended their season and in some instances their track and field careers in Colfax last week.

Glenwood City senior Marcus Kadinger concluded his days in a Toppers’ uniform when he took a seventh in the 800 meters and was tenth in the high jump.

Likewise, Boyceville seniors Mitch Pustol and Caleb Arndt both gave farewell performances in Colfax. Pustol finished ninth in the 1,600 meters and Arndt placed 11th in the discus.

The Bulldogs’ freshmen discus tandem of Haley Wold and Paulina Wenke were 12th and 13th respectively. Boyceville sophomores Brooklyn Booth and Emma Harnisch finished the season strong with sectional appearances. Booth took sixth while Harnisch placed 13th.

The Boyceville girls’ 4 x 100 meter relay team placed tenth.

The state meet is set for this Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at UW-La Crosse’s Memorial Stadium. Competition in both Division 2 and 3 will get underway at 9:30 a.m. Friday. All Boyceville and Glenwood City state qualifiers are slated to compete in Friday morning’s events. Check the WIAA website for order of events.
