GC girls take second at Colfax track invite; Boyceville teams finish fourth

COLFAX — A quartet of  Lady Toppers scored points in multiple events while all four of the squad’s relay teams finished third or better, including a first and two seconds, to boost the Glenwood City girls to a second-place finish at the Colfax Track and Field Invitational Thursday, April 23.

Although junior Rachel Klatt was the Toppers’ lone champion at the meet winning the shot put and taking second in the discus throw, she had plenty of help from her teammates. Mariah Voeltz placed in three events, Morgan Kadinger earned a pair of thirds and Kaitlin Konder grabbed points in two events to lead the Glenwood City girls a runner-up finish with 107 points.

Colfax claimed the girls’ title with 121 points.

The Boyceville boys and girls teams both finished fourth at the meet. The Bulldog boys’ tallied 92 points and the girls finished with 77. St. Croix Central won the boys meet with 160.5 points.

Senior Logan McAbee-Thomas scored a trio of wins to lead the Boyceville boys while sophomores Erica Sempf and Cassie Malean each won an event and also had second place finishes for the Lady Bulldogs.

Glenwood City seniors Todd Petersen and Marcus Kadinger placed in three and two events respectively to pace the Hilltopper boys, who finished last in the six-team meet with 50 points.

Glenwood City girls second

Rachel Klatt earned Glenwood City’s only win of the meet with a heave of 36’ 5” in the girls’ shot put. That put beat runner-up Marianne Scharlau of Colfax’ throw by seven and a half feet. Scharlau, however, bested Klatt in the discus throw by a mere six inches as Klatt settled for second with a toss of 82’ 4”.

Freshman Mariah Voeltz continued her impressive performances last Thursday for the Topper girls. Voeltz finished third in the 100 meter high hurdles (:19.43), leapt to fourth in the long jump (13’ 7.5”) and ran to a sixth place in the 100 meters (:14.19).

Morgan Kadinger and Kaitlin Konder also had a pair of point-scoring finishes for GC.

Kadinger grabbed third in both the 800 meters (2:43.16) and the high jump (4’ 8”).

Konder, a senior, was third in the pole vault (6 6”) and fourth in the 1,600 meters (6:19.98).

Three other Topper girls scored second-place finishes. Maya Petersen in the 100 meter high hurdles, Gabby Peterson in the 100 meters and Jennifer Kopacz in the 400 meters.

Glenwood City also continued to finish well in its relay events. The girls won the 4 x 200 m relay, were second in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 events and finished third in the 4 x 800 meters.

Todd Petersen led the Glenwood City boys. The senior scored a second place in the 110 meter high hurdles (:17.63) and a pair of fourths in the long (18’ 5”) and triple jumps (37’ 6.25”).

Marcus Kadinger placed second in the 400 meters :55.66) and third in the high jump (5’ 6”).

The boys also scored points in three of the four relays taking third in the 4 x 200 meters and fourth in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 m relays.

Boyceville teams finish fourth

Logan McAbee-Thomas gave a dominating performance at last Thursday Colfax invite.

The Boyceville senior was a triple winner at the six-team event, capturing gold in the 200 meter dash (:24.24) and the long (19’ 5”) and triple jumps (41’ 8.5”).

Another Boyceville senior, Mitchell Pustol, ran to a first-place finish in the 1,600 meters (4:49.53) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:14.30).

Freshman Tyler Krueger cleared 12’ even to finish second in the pole vault.

The Boyceville boys also finished third in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 m relays, fourth in the 4 x 200 and sixth in the 4 x 800 m relay.

Cassie Malean ran to the top finish in the girls’ 100 meters with a time of :13.63 besting GC’s Gabby Peterson by a tenth of a second. Malean also finished with the silver in the long jump (15’ 1”)  and high jump (4’ 10”).

Boyceville teammate and fellow sophomore Erica Sempf bested Malean in the long jump with a winning leap of 15’ 9”. Sempf also placed second in the 200 meters (:29.10).
