Track teams have strong showing despite chilly temps

BALDWIN – The Glenwood City and Boyceville track and field teams both participated at the Baldwin-Woodville Invitational last Tuesday, April 15.

Despite the below 40 degree temperature, the Bulldog boys’ team and the Hilltopper girls’ team both placed third. The Topper boys’ team was fourth and the lady Bulldogs finished sixth.

Boyceville’s Performance

Highlighting the day in the field on the girl’s team for the Bulldogs senior Danielle Nelson and freshman Cassie Malean.

Nelson won the pole vault event with a height of 7’ 0” and Malean jumped a personal best in the high jump with a 4’ 10”, which also landed her in second place.

Fellow freshman Tyler Krueger also had a good day in the field with a second place finish in the pole vault with a height of 8’ 6”.

Logan McAbee-Thomas also earned a second place, which came in the triple with a distance of 41’ 0”. This is his first loss in the triple jump in the past five meets. He fell behind returning state champion, Zac Webster of Spring Valley who jumped a 42’ 11”.

On the track, the Bulldog boy’s team had a clean sweep in the 800meter and up. Senior Ian Kane placed first in the 800m with a 2:12.01. Next was fellow senior, Tanner Johnson-Hetchler, who placed first in both the 1600m (5:00.38) and the 3200m (10:58.37).

Fellow Bulldog runner, Mitch Pustol was not far behind in the 1600m and the 3200m as he placed third in both events.

The 4x800m relay team also had a stellar day with a first place finish after Johnson-Hetchler, Caleb Hagen, Pustol and Kane ran a 9:22.76.

Toppers on the track

The Lady Hilltoppers had a good showing all the way around in both the track and field events, which aided in their third place finish with several athletes finishing in the top ten.

In the 800m, Morgan Kadinger finished first (2:40.06), Jenny Lindquist placed third (2:48.08) and Taylor Drinkman was right behind her in fourth (2:49.18). Kaylie Scalze also placed in the top ten in sixth with a time of 2:52.43.

Drinkman turned around and ran a solid race in the 1600m as well with a third place finish (5:58.25).

In the field, Rachel Klatt placed second in the shot put with a distance of 33’ 7.5”. She had a solid discus throw as well with a 76’ 11” that put her in fourth.

Teammate Hannah Steinberger placed in the shot put as well with a distance of 80’ 7” for third.

For the boys’ team, Isaac Tuttle and Charlie Shackett each finished in the top two in the 100m and 200m dashes. Tuttle placed first in the 100m (11.69) and first in the 200m (23.86). Shackett was on his heels with an 11.77 in the 100m and a 24.05 in the 200m.

Also on the track was Sam Melendrez, who placed third in the 300m hurdles with a time of (46.29).

In the field, Tuttle received another first place after his jump of 18’ 8” in the long jump. And in the high jump, Donovan Fornal got himself a second place finish with a jump of 5’ 10”.

Next on the schedule for both schools, will be the meet at the Colfax High School on Thursday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m.
