First track meet of the year has positive results

MENOMONIE – Both the Glenwood City and Boyceville track teams were indoors to compete at their first track event of 2014, which was the Blue Devil Open held on the UW-Stout campus last Tuesday, March 25.

The Hilltopper boys finished ninth out of 22 schools and the ladies placed 14th out of 20 teams that participated. The Bulldogs were not far behind as the boys placed 11th and the girls were in 17th.

“It was a good first showing with some stiff competition,” said coach Corey Day. “We had some young athletes on the girls side that were close to placing and I think they will stand out by the end of the year. Over all myself and Coach Klassen were very pleased with the first effort in competition.”

Earning a gold medal for the Bulldogs was Logan McAbee-Thomas who placed first in the triple jump against 29 other athletes with a jump of 42’ 5.5”.

“Logan was dominant, winning by a foot in the triple jump,” explained Day. “He holds the school record and qualified for state so he has his goals set high and started off close to where he left off last season.”

Coach Day also praised senior Danielle Nelson for her fourth place finish in the pole vault after a jump of 7’ 6”.

“Danielle missed state by one height last year. She has high goals and the fourth place was a great accomplishment since there is no where to practice this event right now with the weather,” said Day.

Earning the sole first place spot for the Hilltoppers was the boy’s 4x200m relay team. Seniors Isaac Tuttle, Nick Mrdutt, Charlie Shackett and Jeff Kopacz ran a 1:38.12; just 29 seconds faster than Hudson who placed second.
