RICE LAKE- Five young men will head to the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison for the Division 3 Team State Championship Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 4.
The last team to go to state for the Hilltoppers was in June of 1999 when Jeremy Lyons, Bo Standaert, Jordan Barringer, Peter Johnston, Tony Obermueller and Will Ohman took second at the Sectional meet with a 347 total.
This score was broke on Tuesday, May 28 when Jake Hierlmeier, Nick Mrdutt, Nathan Mrdutt, Zach Schemionek and Garret Schemionek shot a team score of 330 landing them in second place at the Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake. First place went to Osseo Fairchild with a team score of 319.
It was a nailbiter of a day as the Toppers fluctuated in the standings, going from fifth to third and back as the results poured in, but they never fell beyond the top ten.
Hierlmeier led the team in the 18-hole show down with a score of 40 in each round. One point behind was Nick Mrdutt with an 81 after shooting a 42 in the first nine and a team best round of 39 to end the day. Zach Schemionek finished with an 83 with a first round of 40 and a second of 43. Then it was Garret Schemionek with a 86 after shooting a 42 and 44. Last, was Nathan Mrdutt with an 89 after shooting a 46 and 43.
The Division 3 tee-off time will be at 12:00 p.m. on Monday and will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
