GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City Board of Education met on Monday evening, July 8, and were given a brief update on the number of students who attended the first two weeks of summer school and sports skills.
“We had 114 students attending summer school,” said Nicole Brite. “And 106 of the students stayed for the two hours of sports skills in the afternoon.”
Brite also mentioned that with running two routes throughout the beginning of summer school, the total number of students was 50 each day that were riding the buses.
Before the beginning of the next half of summer school, Brite and the bus drivers will look at both routes and see if it is possible to cut down to using only one bus for the duration of the summer.
According to Betsy Haltinner the Glenwood City Elementary will adopt new services for their science classes, which will includes using materials in the Full Option Science System (FOSS) science kits.
Each kit contains five units and allows students and teachers to have a more hands on approach for the subject.
After a recent self audit done in the elementary, Haltinner was able to bring the board an idea of which subjects teachers wanted to be able to have a hands on approach with, they included: Engineering and Design and Science and Space.
Superintendent Tim Johnson relayed information about the budget, and made the Board aware that the 2019-20 fiscal year had yet to be finalized even though it was technically over at the end of June.
“An audit team will be here on Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17,” said Johnson.
This will help button up last minute figures as well as let Johnson know how much money will be able to be transferred into fund 46 which is the districts long term capital fund.
Several staffing changes were made during the consent agenda portion of the meeting which included: Approving Tim Miller as assistant wrestling coach, Nicole Johnson as cheer coach, Carrie Blanchard as the Athletic Coordinator, Patrick Gretzlock as Athletic Director, and Nicole Miller as varsity volleyball coach. The Board also accepted the resignation of Dan Stansbury as custodian, Carrie Hentz as teacher, Tyler Schroyer as teacher and Gina Holter as middle school yearbook adviser.
