Malean ties Boyceville’s decades old high jump record at SCC Invite

HAMMOND — Boyceville head track coach Corey Day said one of his seniors tied a 35-year-old school record, and a handful of others earned personal records on a sunny, cool, breezy afternoon at St. Croix Central.

Senior Cassie Malean nabbed first place in the high jump with a height of 5-05 and tied a decades old school record in the process when the Bulldog track and field teams traveled to Hammond the afternoon of April 6 to take on a total of 13 other teams.

Malean, who stands 5-04, tied the record set by Maria Walsh in 1982. The senior also won the long jump with a distance of 15-10 and finished fourth in the 100m dash with her 13.67 race.

Freshman Rachel Becker chalked up the Lady Bulldogs’ first point when she finished the 100m hurdles in 21.84. The race winner was St. Croix Central’s Katie Koerper.

Brooklyn Booth, a classmate of Malean’s, nabbed third place in the pole vault after clearing 8-00. St. Croix Falls vaulters Bille Webb and Anja Erickson cleared 8-06 to take first and second in the event.

Those finishes helped the Boyceville girls earn eighth place out of 12 teams (46 points), while the boys took 13th out of 13 (10 points).

The home team took top honors as the girls’ team, earning 129 points over the course of the meet.

Distance runner Kiel Anderson logged Boyceville’s first boys’ team points by finishing fifth in the two mile race with a time of 11:28.30. The senior was bested by Prescott’s Phillip Pena, who won with his 10:46.19 effort. 

Junior Brandon Kenefick vaulted a height of 11-00 to take fourth in boys’ pole vault. Nathan Strader of St. Croix Central won the event, clearing 12-00.

The Elk Mound boys took home the team trophy after scoring 125 points at the meet.

The Bulldogs ran April 11 at Baldwin-Woodville, but are on a break until April 20 when they host a meet at home.
