Glenwood City and Boyceville choose Dunn-St. Croix scholar athletes

In 2016, the Dunn-St. Croix athletic directors held their first conference scholar athlete banquet to honor D-SC athletes for their success in the classroom in addition to their athletic success.

One female and one male athlete from each D-SC school is nominated for the award. Criteria for nomination include grade point average, number of varsity letters earned in high school, individual awards and participation in the lead-up to state-level competition.

This year’s athletes will be recognized at the conference level with an April 5 banquet held at Stout Ale House. The keynote speaker is Durand district superintendent Greg Corning, and each athlete will be formally recognized.

The male and female nominees from Boyceville and Glenwood City High Schools are presented here.

Boyceville

Boyceville nominated seniors Madysn Riek and James Palmer as this year’s D-SC scholar athletes.

Riek carries a 3.94 GPA, and has 11 varsity letters to her name. She was awarded second-team all-D-SC honors for 2015-2016 in volleyball, basketball and softball, and was named to the first team for both volleyball and basketball for the 2016-2017 seasons. Riek was also honored as the 2016 D-SC volleyball player of the year.

Palmer has seven varsity letters and has been a heavy contributor to the Bulldogs’ wrestling squad since his freshman year. He earned second-team all-D-SC honors as a freshman, and qualified for state wrestling in 2014 after winning regional and sectional championships. He repeated his regional wrestling feat in 2015 after earning first-team conference honors. Palmer was sectional runner up and qualified for state.

In 2016, Palmer qualified for state wrestling again after earning first-team honors and winning the regional championship. He also was named first-team all-conference in baseball. He rounded out his high school wrestling career in 2016-2017 by taking first-team D-SC honors, winning regional and sectional championships, and earning a state wrestling title.

Palmer has maintained a 3.9 GPA throughout his high school career.

Glenwood City

Two more seniors, Allen Croes and Taylor Drinkman, are Glenwood City’s nominees for Dunn-St. Croix scholar athletes.

Croes was awarded three varsity letters in football, two in basketball, and has so far earned two letters in track. The senior has a 3.6 GPA, and earned first team all-conference honors as a football player.

Drinkman carries a 3.8 GPA and earned varsity letters in cross country and track all four years of her high school career. She earned all-conference awards in a variety of events in 2014 and 2016. The senior runner was honored as an all-conference runner as an individual in 2013, and as part of a team in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
