Five Boyceville wrestlers named to Crossface All-State Academic teams

The Wisconsin Crossface Wrestling magazine has named five Boyceville wrestlers to its 2016 All-State Academic teams.

The Crossface recently released its all-state academic teams for the 9-10 grades and 11-12 grades for the past season and making the list were Boyceville senior Brandon Windsor, junior James Palmer, sophomores Jason Swanepoel and Garrett Joles and freshman Brock Schlough.

It was the second consecutive year that Joles, Palmer and Swanepoel have earned selection to the All-State Academic teams.

Garrett Joles was tabbed for his second straight first-team honors in 9-10 grade division after he finished second at 182 pounds in the 2016 WIAA State Championships. Joles capped his second varsity season with a 44-4 record and his second straight state silver medal.

Teammate Brock Schlough joined Joles on this year’s first team after he completed his freshman campaign with a 42-4 mark and the 138-pound, Division 3 state championship in Madison this past February.

Palmer, who competed in his third consecutive WIAA State Wrestling tournament, earned a spot on the third team in the 11-12 grades category. Palmer, a junior at Boyceville High School, finished last season with a record of 39-6 and competed in the 132-pound weight class at state.

Brandon Windsor and Jason Swanepoel were both tabbed for the honorable mention squad in the 11-12 grade and 9-10 grade categories respectively. Windsor, the Bulldogs’ senior heavyweight spent a good portion of the season as Division 3’s top-ranked 285 pounder and capped his final season with a 24-6 record. Swanepoel was a third-team all-state academic selection last season.

Criteria for all-state academic selection include a wrestler’s overall grade point average (GPA), 2014-15 varsity wins, and placement at state. The GPA is multiplied by 100 and then added to the number of varsity wins in the season and state tournament placement points (60 for first, 50 for second, 40 for third, etc.) for a final point total. The top point-getters are awarded first-team designation, followed by second team, then third team and honorable mention.

The awards are broken into a pair of categories – one for wrestlers in the ninth and tenth grades and the other for 11th and 12th grades.
