Lady Bulldogs 1-2 on the week with victory over Spring Valley on the diamond

By Kelsie Hoitomt

The Boyceville softball team had three games last week with one against Elk Mound on Tuesday, May 13, another on Thursday against Spring Valley and then one against Colfax on Friday.

They were scheduled to host a double-header against Elmwood/Plum City on Monday, but the rain throughout the day cancelled the contest.

Mounders top Bulldogs

The Mounders are currently the number one team in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference with just one loss under their name.

Despite that, the Bulldogs gave them a real run for their money and their defense held the Mounders to just three runs earned, including one home run, in the 3-1 final.

The Bulldogs lost earlier this season 10-5 so the two point loss was quite an improvement on their part.

Kennedy Hellmann led the Bulldogs on defense as their starting pitcher. She threw all seven innings and allowed just five hits and the three runs. She had only one walk and threw one strikeout.

On the opposing side was Dayna Kotecki. She threw all seven innings for the Mounders and allowed one run, three hits and two walks, but she had four strikeouts.

The Bulldogs’ one run came in the second inning by Madysn Riek. Maddy Bygd followed her in the batting order and hit a double for the RBI.

The closest the Bulldogs got to home plate after that was in the fifth inning when Lexi Peterson singled herself to first and then sat on second.

As for the Mounders, they scored one run in the first inning by Lexi Delong and then Kotecki jacked a home run out over center field in the fourth. Their final run came in the seventh inning by Abbey Olson.

Bulldogs win over Cardinals

The Bulldogs got a win while playing in Spring Valley last Thursday night after beating the Cardinals 20-8 in five innings.

The game started with the Bulldogs leading 3-1 after Brooklynn Blaser, Kennedy Hellmann and Kayla Nelson scored. Nelson and Riek had the RBIs in the inning.

The scored was 4-3 in the second inning after the Cardinals’ edged out one more run than the Bulldogs. The score remained close in the third inning as well with both teams scoring three runs, which kept the Bulldogs out in front by one.

However, the game started to change in fourth when the Bulldogs put five runners across home plate and their defense held the Cardinals to zero.

The dagger was pushed through in the fifth inning when the Bulldogs posted eight runs and the Cardinals followed up with only two, which ended the game on the ten-run rule.

Blaser scored the team’s one run in the second inning. In the third, it was Riek, Lexi Peterson and Peyton Hellmann that scored.

Then in the fourth it was Blaser again for her third run, then Bygd, Riek, Peterson and Marki Lagerstrom.

The final eight runs came from Blaser, Jenna Beyrer, Nelson, Bygd, Riek, Peterson, Peyton Hellmann and Lagerstrom.

Peterson led the team in RBIs with three, Blaser, Beyrer, Kennedy Hellmann, Payton Hellmann, Riek and Lagerstrom each had two and Nelson and Bygd each had one.

Bulldogs lose at home

The Bulldogs ended their week at home with a game against Colfax, which ended in a loss of 10-4.

The Bulldogs held a four point lead for a solid three innings with the score at 4-0 going into the fourth after Blaser, Kennedy Hellmann, Bygd and Riek scored.

Their lead slowly slipped away when they allowed the Vikings to hit in two runs in the fourth and then another two in the fifth.

The Bulldogs were unable to generate any additional runs and their defense saw the Vikings plug away with one run in the sixth scored and then a final five in the seventh to end the game 10-4.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play one last game on Tuesday in Glenwood City. They will play again on Thursday, May 22 for their first Regional contest, which will be at home against Clear Lake at 5:00 p.m.
