MENOMONIE — The Boyceville Science Olympiad teams competed at the Wisconsin Science Olympiad state tournament at UW-Stout this past weekend, with a second division based on school size being introduced for the first time. The BHS team won the state championship over Baldwin-Woodville, while the team from BMS won the state championship in a competitive tournament over the EAGLE School of Madison.
Boyceville High School and Middle School became the first ever state champions in the two division era, with divisions being based on school size. The largest half of teams in the state were placed in Division 1, while the smaller half of teams were placed in Division 2.
With Boyceville Middle School finishing as the state runner-up team overall regardless of division, they have been nominated as an alternate team for the National Science Olympiad tournament next month at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. While it is unlikely Boyceville Middle School team will actually be invited to compete it is an honor to simply qualify as an alternate overall despite coming from Division 2.
Boyceville High School also won the Team Spirit Award as voted on by the event supervisors for their outstanding show of team sportsmanship, spirit, and high character.

“Our kids had an historic day” said Boyceville Science Olympiad coach Andy Hamm. “I was so impressed with all of the hard work so many kids put in all year long and it definitely paid off with the team finishes at state. It is so exciting to win a state team championship with not only one team but both teams. The kids have worked so hard this year and I could not be more proud of each and every student – all of whom had an important part in making a team state championship possible!”
Boyceville Science Olympiad is coached by Andy Hamm, Russ Riehbrandt, and Tony Pelikan.
