Boyceville volleyball sweeps Glenwood City; both go on to play additional D-SC matches

A year ago, Glenwood City went into Boyceville and earned its lone conference volleyball victory at the Bulldogs’ expense.
With Glenwood City hosting rival Boyceville last Tuesday, October 1 during homecoming week, no less, the Bulldogs figured turn about was fair play and swept their hosts in three sets.
Boyceville looked to add a third D-SC win to its tally when it hosted Mondovi two days later while Glenwood City, still in search of its first conference victory, traveled to Colfax who also found themselves without a league “W”. Unfortunately, neither squad was victorious in their respective Thursday, October 3 showdowns. The Bulldogs lost in five sets while the Hilltoppers were swept once again.
The split currently has Boyceville (6-12 overall) tied with three other schools for third place in the D-SC standings with a 2-2 mark. Glenwood City, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4 in conference matches and 3-14 ioverall.
Glenwood City has a busy week as they traveled to New Auburn Monday for a triangular, hosts Elk Mound Thursday and finishes off with a Saturday tournament in Somerset.
Boyceville has just a single match this week. A contest at Durand-Arkansaw High School this Thursday versus the conference-leading Panthers.
Boyceville at Glenwood City
Despite ending in a Boyceville sweep, last Tuesday’s volleyball showdown in GC was highly competitive in two of the three sets.
It took the visiting Bulldogs extra points to decide the opening set as they squeaked out a 26-24 win over the Hilltoppers.
The momentum from that opening set victory seemed to charge up Boyceville as it took control of the action on the court and prevailed for a 25-16 win and two sets to none advantage.
The hosts, however, played the Bulldogs close in the third set. But, Boyceville was eventually able to pull out a 25-23 win to earn the 3-0 victory.
The statistics also bore out the Bulldogs victory. Boyceville finished with 31 kills in the match compared to 18 for Glenwood City. The Bulldogs nearly doubled the Hilltoppers in assists – 27 to 16, and had eight more ace serves in contest (18 to ten). Boyceville again lead in defensive digs with 49 compared to 40 for Glenwood City.
Individually for the Bulldogs, Zoey Hellendrung registered ten kills and Aubrey Malean and Chelsi Holden each tallied seven, Gretta Guy finished with 13 assists and Delaney Olson had a dozen, Guy also led her team with seven aces, and Hellendrung and Mercedes Barstad both tallied double-digit digs with 15 and 11, respectively.

Isabel Davis topped Glenwood City in kills with seven, Haley Ketola lead with 11 assists, Jenna McCarthy and Davis each had four ace serves in the match, and Opal Voeltz led with ten digs, followed by eight from Gretchen Draxler and seven by Ketola.
Mondovi at Boyceville
Boyceville started well when it hosted the Buffaloes of Mondovi Thursday, October 3.
The Bulldogs took a 25-18 win in the opening set.
The Buffaloes came back to win the second set by the same score and then pulled out a 27-25 win in set number three.
Boyceville evened the match and forced a fifth and deciding set with a 25-22 victory in the fourth game.
Mondovi, however, prevailed 15-10 in the final set to take the win.
Zoey Hellendrung finished with 15 of the Bulldogs’ 38 kills and Aubrey Malean collected ten. Delaney Olson and Gretta Guy accounted for 31 of Boyceville’s 35 assists with Olson getting 16 and Malean 15. Hellendrung also had four of her squad’s six assists and 17 of the 74 digs. Also registering double-digit digs were Olson with 15, Chelsi Holden had 14 and Mercedes Barstad came up with a dozen. Lucy Wheeldon had three solo blocks.
Glenwood City at Colfax
Colfax was up 21-20 in a very close first set and pulled away for the win on a Hilltopper serving error and three points with Rihn at the service line for the 25-20 win.
The Vikings led 11-6 in set number two, but the Hilltoppers closed the gap at 11-10 before Colfax called a time out. The Vikings proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 20-11 and eventually won 25-15.
The third set was very competitive with the score knotted at 8-8 and the Toppers pulled ahead 12-10. But, Colfax came back to tie it up then rattled off six more points for an 18-13 advantage and went on to post a 25-14 win to end the match.
Glenwood City tallied 15 kills in the match with six credited to Davis, and had 14 assists led by Ketola’s nine. McCarthy had four of the Toppers’ seven ace serves and Voeltz and Ketola both finished with seven digs while the Toppers registered 35 in all.
