Only 2 weeks until Christmas! If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping, no better time than the present. This week we finally got a little snow to set the mood for the holiday. The residents were ecstatic about the storm, but worried for the staff that had to endure the elements. We talked about days of old when farm chores had to be done even if there was a storm, sledding or tobogganing the “big hills” and funny stories of mishaps.
Things have been bustling with holiday activity. On Monday, St. Nick’s Day, the residents made cute Christmas stockings. We had a bunch of holiday themed fabric and printed a template of a stocking, which was pinned to the fabric for each resident. The residents were responsible for cutting out their stocking around the template. Then, we punched holes around the cut edges with a fabric hole punch and helped the residents whipstitch the front and back pieces together. It was really a good time. I told them the story of St. Nicholas that was told to me by my grandma and dad. How we used to write our letters to Santa and leave them in our stockings or shoes outside our door. In the morning, the letters would be gone and candy, fruit and small toys would replace it. If you were bad, however, the Krampus would take you away in a coal sack and reform you. Traditions, yeah.
Tuesday we played Trivia all about Christmas. David was our big winner! He won a lot of chocolate bars that he apparently ate in one sitting and promptly got sick afterward. Even he laughed about it and said it was worth it!
Wednesday we had our beautiful beautician out to do hair. She does Grand Oaks and Havenwood on Thursdays, but Wednesdays are for Glenhaven residents. One of our new residents had her hair done for the first time since arriving. The smile on Sue’s face, and the confidence exuding from her afterwards, reminded us all just how important a bit of pampering means to the residents. BINGO, of course, in the afternoon, called by Abby!
Thursday, the residents seemed to have sensed something was brewing as far as the weather. A lot of them were restless. Becky said it is the barometric pressure. I can’t wait for summer storms to prove that theory! Just kidding, Becky. We did Christmas sing-along and colored intricate pictures of Christmas trees. We used colored pencils, crayons and markers as our medium. Staff helped too and their pictures were dedicated to the residents. Love it!
Friday brought the snow. At first, it didn’t seem like we were going to get anything, but right after lunch, it came! And, it did not let up until early Saturday morning. All of the residents were sitting by the windows watching it pile up on the patio furniture. Norman was watching for deer though. It’s his favorite thing to do.
