CAMERON — Coming into play August 27th, Boyceville coach Michael Roemhild appeared to have his Bulldog football squad firing on all cylinders.
A dominant performance the prior week against an under matched Independence/Gilmanton saw the Bulldogs beat the Indees 47-6. This past week’s matchup against the Comets of Cameron would look very much the same.
Using a punishing ground game and a stifling defense, the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 36-0 victory last Friday evening. That win would put them at 2-0 on the early season and cap a successful non-conference schedule as they prepare to begin conference play this week.
“Bash led us in this game and is running with confidence,” Roemhild said of Boyceville victory over Cameron. “I thought Tyler, Ira, Nick, and Braden ran well also.”
Running would be the calling card for the Bulldogs on this day and would be used early and often with success. The company of Bulldog rushers combined for 262 total yards on 35 carries, with Bash Nielson leading the way with 12 carries for 120 yards. Tyler Dormanen followed up with 59 yards on nine carries.
The scoring started for the Bulldogs on their second possession. After the Boyceville defense forced the Comets to punt from their own 1-yard line, the Bulldogs would start in positive territory on the Comets 30-yard line.
Runs of six and 14 yards by Nielson would set up a 10-yard scamper by Domanen to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. The ensuing passing PAT attempt by quarterback Ira Bialzik would be unsuccessful, setting the score at 6-0.
The defense would once again hold, forcing Cameron to a 3-and-out and set Boyceville up in great field position on the Comets 40-yard line. The series would once again see the Bulldogs grind the ball into the end zone. This six-play series would see Bialzik keep the ball and carry it 29 yards for the touchdown, and the 12-0 lead.
On the next Bulldog offensive series, they would only need three plays to extend the lead. Bialzik would find an open Dormanen and connection with him for a 59-yard reception that would extend Boyceville’s lead. The failed rushing PAT would keep the score at 18-0.

Not to be outdone by the offense, the Boyceville defense joined the scoring parade. At the 2:47 mark of the second quarter, Nick Olson would intercept a pass from Comet QB Tyson Lucas and return it 48 yards to extend the lead to a healthy 24-0.
However, the Bulldogs were not done for the half. After forcing a Cameron punt, Bialzik would connect on a 40-yard pass-catch to Caden Wold to get the Bulldogs to Comets 2-yard line. Nielson would take the next handoff and carry it across the goal line to end the scoring for the half and give Boyceville the 30-0 lead.
Boyceville would start the second half where they left off; scoring touchdowns. Boyceville would march 70 yards on seven plays and see Nielson score on a rush from 29 yards out to round out the scoring for the Bulldogs at 36-0.
“I thought we came out with a lot more intensity this game, not quite where I want it yet but we were better than the first game,” noted Roemhild. “Ira didn’t get to pass much, but when he did he completed deep throws.”
Bialzik finished the game completing three of six passing attempts for 110 yards. Dormanen, Wold, and John Klefstad each tallied a single reception with Dormanen leading the way with 59 yards and a score.
While the offense looked dominant on this evening, Roemhild leveled a lot of praise on this defense’s performance.
“Tyler and Mason did great containing their outside game. Our big guys in the middle did not allow them to get a big push and it showed in the stats,” Roemhild said. “We only gave up about 100 yards as a team and posted our first shutout of the season.”
Looking ahead to next week Roemhild commented, “Now conference play starts, and we have a big game against Cadott at home,” he concluded.“Even though they lost their first two games they are going to be a tough team.”
The Bulldogs will return home to host conference foe Cadott on September 3rd. Opening kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
