Jello Making at Havenwood
The summer is flying by. Pretty soon we’ll be getting a sneezle of snow. Meanwhile back at the ranch.
Monday started out the day by an invigorating hour of exercising. Tuesday we played our weekly game of volleyball using fly swatters and balloons. Some folks hit pretty wicked so I won’t be surprised to see helmets on the field next week. Wednesday was our trivia hour so we learned a lot about the culture in the 70’s.
Do you remember who used to beg the customers “please don’t squeeze the Charmin?” Mr. Whipple. I thought it was Roy Rogers. The Magic 8 Ball answered questions with replies like “try again.” Remember the name of the handheld slide viewer that allowed us to look at 3D images inserted in the paper disks? The View-Master. Which sound system required the use of large rectangular tape cartridges? The 8 track player. The mood ring was the first piece of jewelry to include liquid crystal display technology. I had one of them. And remember the good old shag carpeting used to cover everything from floors to hippie vans. The name of the fashion footwear that had an average of 2-5 inch thick solid soles was called platforms. I had a pair of those. Nearly killed myself trying to walk in them. People used phrases like “10-4 good buddy” when communicating on the CB radio system in the 70’s. One of our tenants had the handle “Lucky Lady.” Mine was “Bodacious Blonde.” Go figure. In the 70’s a highly collectable item was Precious Moments. My sister-in-law had a few of those. And who can forget the denim famous bell bottoms? I shudder when I think about the fact I wore them. What was the name of the 70’s shoe line that were lower than the rest of the soles? They were the famous Earth shoes. And finally, which inanimate “pet” reached its peak popularity in the 70’s? There were pet rocks.
And now we’ll come back to this week in 2021. On Friday we had our weekly bingo game. We have some new tenants. In fact we are 100% capacity now.
On Saturday the fire alarm went off so we scurried out of the building and were met by a barrage of fire trucks. Apparently a clothes dryer malfunctioned and caused some smoke and damage to the dryer. That was our big excitement for the day.
But lo and behold the alarm went off on Sunday also. This time there was no problem just a reset button problem.
Anyway, we are now practiced in responding to the fire drill. On Sunday to prepare for Jello Day on Monday, Doris Berends came down to help us make jello in little vintage jello tins. We’ll have them for lunch today. Hope you are having a great summer! Stay safe!
