We did exercises on Monday and Thursday mornings to get everyone stretched out and limbered up.
We did some trivia on Labor Day this week, and passed out some word search games with the Labor Day theme. Residents were amazed to hear that the minimum wage back in 1938 was $.25/hour. We learned some very interesting facts, such as companies had people working 12 hour days, 7 days a week, and having children as young as 6 year olds working, and paying them just a fraction of what the adults got. All this is what lead to the labor movement, and the creation of Labor Day to honor the working people of the U.S.
We also spent some time discussing with the residents the jobs they had, and if they liked them. One of the most interesting jobs came from Doris Herdahl, who got us all laughing when she said she counted worms. We had to get all the details on that one. She also worked at Sears for a number of years, and her favorite job was working as an ad sales person for The Lutheran Digest, which her and her husband did together for 15 years. They got to do a lot of traveling together. Sounds like a great job, doesn’t it?
Several people watched church services on TV on Tuesday, and in the afternoon we went out and watered the flowers and picked tomatoes from our garden. Everyone is enjoying the fresh tomatoes! We also managed to get two cucumbers. Wow!
The in-house beauty shop was in business on Wednesday. Jen will return to her hairdresser duties next week.
Household E was our destination for Bingo this week. They had a good time, and everyone enjoyed coffee and cookies after the game.
Besides exercises in the morning, Thursday was care conference day, and we also did some manicures for the ladies in need.
As usual, Friday was our popcorn day, which everyone looks forward to. The whole place smells like popcorn when we’re done. We also made a batch of refrigerator pickles with the cukes donated by Missy Klatt. She also brought us some tomatoes. It’s amazing to me the difference between fresh tomatoes and those you buy in the store. Thanks, Missy.
Next week we celebrate Ken Carlson’s Birthday. Happy Birthday, Ken!
I imagine our readers are wondering what the answer is to last week’s joke, so here goes. The joke was “What’s grey and wrinkly and jumps every 20 seconds?” The answer: An elephant with the hiccups.
Have a happy and safe Labor Day Holiday!

Our Monday started with in-room exercises. In the afternoon, we went outside for “Music in the Courtyard.” We listened to the Beach Boys and did some visiting.
We also celebrated Delaney Mattison’s birthday on Monday. Happy Birthday, Delaney!
Several residents wanted to watch church on TV on Tuesday morning, so we set them up with services on Youtube. In the afternoon we held Resident Council, which also is done by going room to room and asking residents if they have any concerns. Any concerns are related to the appropriate department head to be resolved.
Beauty shop is back in session this week, so the ladies from Glenhaven went down on Wednesday and got “beautified.”
Bingo was held in C&D Households this week. After Bingo, residents enjoyed blueberry popsicles, as Wednesday was National Blueberrry Popsicle Day. Have you ever tried finding blueberry popsicles?
Thursday found us exercising in the morning, holding care conferences throughout the day, and doing manicures in the afternoon.
Friday was our usual “Popcorn Day”, and we did some gardening and time outside in the courtyard in the afternoon.
Several families have already taken advantage of the new “Outside Visits”. We have a tent set up in the courtyard, and visitors can sit on the other side of the fence and visit. It seems to be working well. We hope more families will take this opportunity to come and visit with their loved ones. We still have the window visits as an option also.
Everyone here at Glenhaven would like to extend our sympathies to the families of Jack Timm and Delores Zulawski. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Have a good week and stay healthy.
