Glenhaven News – August 8-14
We enjoyed some time outside on Monday, and had ice cream treats to cool us off.
Tuesday was “Peach Day”, in celebration of National Peach month. We had some trivia about peaches and had hot peaches and ice cream for an afternoon snack. That’s a treat I learned from the Berends family. Some of the residents had never heard of it. They all seemed to really enjoy it. The kitchen also served a peach dessert for supper. Did you know that a peach is a member of the rose family? Or that there are freestone and clingstone peaches, which are exactly what the name implies-that the seed or stone, as it is called, either clings to the flesh of the peach, or easily releases from it.
We had some ground cherries to sample this week too. They brought back memories for many of our residents, and again, there were some who had never heard of them. It also made for interesting conversation with the staff, most of which didn’t have any idea what I was talking about.
Several residents watched church on TV for church day on Tuesday morning.
We were back to our in-house beauty shop on Wednesday. This is just temporary until Jen gets back from vacation. We also made 3 pails of refrigerator pickles, which should be good to eat in about 2 weeks.
Household E was our area for Bingo on Wednesday. We are trying to get each household involved. It went very well, and they enjoyed coffee and cookies following Bingo.
Residents had in-room exercises on Monday and Thursday mornings, and we had our usual Friday morning Popcorn Day.
This Saturday will be “National Honey Bee Awareness Day”. So, in celebration of that day, we did some honey bee projects this week. Resident painted pictures of honey bees on posters and we added sayings of their choosing such as: Bee Happy, Bee Grateful, Just Bee You, to name a few. They will be hung on resident’s doors, or wherever they want them hung, just to boost everyone’s spirits a little during this trying time. We also did some bee trivia and had treats of a snack mix made of honeycomb cereal, honey Teddy grahams, and M&Ms.
I got a call from Carolyn in Lake Elmo. It sounds like and some of her friends are anxious to know answer to my cake trivia question “What kind of cake is at the bottom of the ocean?”. Yes, Carolyn, you are correct! The answer is sponge cake. Thanks for reading and I’m glad you enjoy trivia-I can certainly find lots more where that came from!!!
Next week we’ll have Bill Hoffman’s Birthday to look forward to.
Have a good week, and everyone stay healthy!
Greetings from the residents at Havenwood. Monday we were treated to ice cream and fresh picked blackberries by the son of one of our residents. It was delicious. Another day we were privileged to have an old-fashioned ice cream cone. Boy, did that bring back memories. Never too old for an ice cream cone.
One Wednesday we got to do a special project on bees with materials given to us by Doris Berends from Glenhaven. What the project entailed was making posters with a bee saying, i.e. Bee Kind, Bee Grateful! Etc. They turned out nice.
We got the vintage coffee tin puzzle glued and framed. A little break and we will start on the kitten puzzle. We are still social distancing and wearing masks. It has become a way of life. But apparently it’s working because we have no COVID among our staff and residents.
One day we were given colorful place mats to eat our meals on by a staff member. On Friday we had our weekly doorway bingo. We’re all winners!
Our sympathies go out to Charlie Roen, a resident whose son passed away this week.
We are like family here, sharing the good and bad times.
We are picking ripe tomatoes grown in containers throughout the campus. They are a nice addition to our meals.
The baking club baked some good peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies for our 3:00 coffee. We have some good bakers in there.
That pretty much takes us through another week.
Take good care everyone, and see you next week.
