GLENWOOD CITY — Several yard signs can be seen around town for the class of 2020 Glenwood City High school senior class.
Middle/High school principal, Patrick Gretzlock, had decided to provide the signs to the seniors in hopes of drawing recognition to them based on all that the students are missing over the last three months of their career at Glenwood City High School.
“I am troubled and disappointed that this cohort has to finish their career and time here at Glenwood City in such an abrupt manner and thought I would find a simple way to bring attention to these students and their families,” said Gretzlock.
Gretzlock explained that once the signs arrived, he and his wife assembled them, and Gretzlock’s assistant Carrie Blanchard was responsible for compiling the addresses of the 50-plus seniors.
He then spent time on Google maps to coordinate his route in which he would be able to deliver the signs on Friday, April 17, which took him under six hours.
“I left my house at 6:50 a.m. on Friday, and returned to the school at 12:30 p.m. having delivered 55 signs throughout the school district, Woodville, Spring Valley, Menomonie, and Boyceville to account for the students and parents of our graduating students,” Gretzlock explained.
Mr. Gretzlock is not sure what his hopes are once the state mandated shut down ends, but he does hope that the district does not lose sight of the Class of 2020 and what the last three months of school would have meant for them.
However, he does know that while the graduating seniors have experienced the most noticeable events being taken away, it has also affected all of the Glenwood City students and turned their lives upside down.
Glenwood City School District has continued to be mindful of Governor Tony Evers’ Safer At Home Order, all the while looking to take care of all of their students.
“We are currently working on plans for a graduation ceremony that will undoubtedly look unlike any other graduation ceremony that has ever taken place and will hopefully occur on Saturday, May 23,” stated Gretzlock. “In addition, I am working on coordinating with members of the class to determine if there is still an interest in a traditional ceremony once the current orders have eased.”
