GLENWOOD CITY—Many reports were presented to the school board to inform them about school activities and test scores from the spring 2019 State Assessment results.
Nicole Brite, Director of Pupil Services and Special Education, reported to the board on those state results with charts comparing Glenwood City Schools with other schools in the athletic conference and with those within St. Croix County. She noted; “every school in the district went down compared to last year.” Brite continued by telling the board that they were, “still looking at the numbers from the tests.”
Elementary Principal Betsy Haltinner gave an update on the GCE and PLC Essential Standards and presented information from a recent conference that she had attended and reported to the board about team learning and stated that everyone, “can get moving in the same direction.” She also discussed the Federal Title Four 2020 plan grant for “Safe and Health Schools.”
Middle/ High School Principal Patrick Gretzlock informed the board about Aiden Voeltz and Emily Bethell who have been nominated for the Presidential Scholarship. He also praised Matt Lamb and the marching band students for all their great work this summer. He noted that the last parade was at Spring Valley last weekend and that the band received outstanding comments at the parade.
Gretzlock spent some time informing the board about busing students to local churches on Wednesday afternoon for programs at those churches. He noted that there were about 120 students involved going to the three churches in town.
Gretzlock also informed the board about the new plan for realignment of the football conferences and play. He related that he had attended the annual WIAA meeting and learned about the plan for football and noted that some of the conferences may no longer exist. He explained that each school is being placed within a district with schools that have about the same enrollment. The football season would have the first two games of the season against non-conference teams and then the next seven games would be against conference teams and he told the board under the new alignment that the furtherest travel would be to Cadott, comparing it to the current distance to Durand. He also informed them that the basketball season would be extended to 24 games.
Board members Lisa Logghe questioned Gretzlock about the football game played on the Rustic Lore weekend and could it be a home game. She was informed that game scheduling is out of the hands of the local schools.
He also reported on the homecoming plans and that an outdoor movie is being planned for a half hour after the completion of the football game. Fall Creek will be the Hilltoppers opposition at the homecoming game on October 4th.
In other action the school board approved adding a second assistant cross country coach because of the number of students participating in cross country. It was noted that there is more than 50 involved. The board approved hiring Sarah Nichols for the new position.
The board approved Mick Rosenow, Joe Berends and Mike Draxler as sub bus drivers, and Mike and Rebecca Draxler as volunteers.
