COLFAX — After winning the Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship for the first time in school history a year ago, the Colfax softball team will have to replace several key players if they want to make it two in a row.
The Vikings finished 20-4 overall and were 14-0 in conference play but lost in the regional final to Chippewa Falls McDonell Central.
Gone through graduation are four-year starter Jada Anderson, a four-time All-Conference player, Wisconsin Fast Pitch Coaches Association (WFSCA) All-District player and WFSCA All-Star. She also ranks first in program history for career hits with 111 and runs scored with 121 with a .427 career batting average. McKenna Shipman was also a four-year starter and three time All-Conference selection, completing her career with a .379 batting average with a program high 52 stolen bases. Alexis Schindler, another four-year starter for the Vikings, playing first base the last two seasons, and Mackenzi Loback was a valuable player as a DP.
Colfax coach John Dickinsen begins his eighth year at the helm and carries a 57-55 overall record. He has plenty of experienced players back from last year including junior Brynn Sikora, the D-SC Conference player of the year. Sikora was a two-time All-Conference player, two time WFSCA All-District selection and WFSCA All-State pick a year ago. After playing catcher the past two years, she will move to shortstop this year.
Also back is junior pitcher Laikyn Beyer who hurled virtually every inning last year. She was named All-Conference for her efforts and was WFSCA Honorable Mention All-District as a sophomore.
Senior Hannah Peterson will patrol center field this season as a three-year starter and a two-time All-Conference selection while senior Audrey Ebert, also a three-year starter and two time All-Conference pick will play outfield and as a DP.
Senior Emma Medin will play the hot corner at third base and is a three-year starter and All-Conference play as a junior and rounding out the starters is junior Sierra Shipman, an outfielder who is a two-time All-Conference selection.
Newcomers who will get a chance to step up are sophomores Adelyn Acker, Sophia Hazuga, Aleah Schindler, Olivia Schindler, Ashlyn Bauer, Avah Elmer and Jordyn Sloan. Freshmen battling for a varsity spot are Kenlee Bjork, Alleah Kunsman, Lyric Nichols, Alexa Weidner, Sydney Rundle, Ryinn Hoyt, Arianna McVinnie, Emma Pevin and Georgia Runowski.
Coach Dickinsen believes the strength of his team includes having a very good core of players returning. The junior and senior leaders will need to mesh with and bring along a talented young group of sophomores and freshmen that will need to adjust to varsity softball very quickly.
Dickinsen looks for Boyceville, Colfax, Elk Mound and Mondovi to be the top contenders for the D-SC Conference title this season.
“All of these teams return very solid pitching and most of them are returning many position players. It should be a balanced conference once again with many teams having the chance to win many games,” he commented.
