Bulldog girls’ track team opens season with win, takes first at Eau Claire North Invite

EAU CLAIRE — The Boyceville girls’ track team took first at the Eau Claire North Varsity Invite held on Friday, March 28. It was the first meet of the season and they started out strong scoring 100 points, their closest competitors were St. Croix Central who scored 79.5 points.
First-place event finishers included Chelsi Holden who cruised over the finish line of the 55 meter dash in 7.78 seconds and Sydney Larson in the long jump with a leap of 14’ 6”. The 4×800 meter relay team also earned first place with a time of 11:34, members of the team were Ashlyn Maska, Blake Jeske, Ellie Engeman and Halle Tonn.
Jeske ran the 800 meter race in 2:47 and Lucy Wheeldon cleared 4’ 6” in high jump, both performances were good for second place. Jeske and Wheeldon were on the 4×400 meter relay team which also earned a second place with a time of 4:46, along with teammates Elliana Kietzer and Maska.
Maska secured a third-place finish in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 6:27. Coming in fourth were Holden in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.34, Maddie Nelson in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 10.94 and Tonn in pole vault with a jump of 8’ 6”.
The 4×200 meter relay team placed fifth as did Engeman in the mile run and Larson in triple jump. The team scored 12 points between the three events. Other teammates that scored points were: Kayla Frett in the 55 meter dash, Larson in the 200 meter dash, Wheeldon in the 400 meter run, Lydia Day and Layla Score in the 800 meter run and Kylee Schlough in long jump.
Nine teams competed in the girls’ events. In addition to St. Croix Central, the Bulldogs beat teams from Chippewa Falls, Ellsworth, Durand, Eau Claire North, Menomonie, Tomah, Wausau East and Black River Falls.
The boys’ team did not fare as well, placing tenth out of 11 teams with a score of 29.5. Chippewa Falls won the meet with 105 points.
The top placing member of the boys’ team was Owen Rydel who placed third in triple jump with a leap of 37’ 10.5”. Riley Naughton placed fourth in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:12. Also placing fourth were jumpers Isaiah Romero in high jump at 5’ 6” and Liam Moore in pole vault at 10’.
Forest Bettendorf scored four points for the team by placing fifth in the 3,200 meter run. Gavin Rydel picked up two points by placing seventh in triple jump and was a member of the 4×400 meter relay team which also earned a seventh-place finish. Other members of the relay team were Romero, Devon Lee and Jon Madison.
Jon Frett rounded out the scoring members of the team by placing eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26:09.
