BOYCEVILLE-At their meeting on Wednesday evening the Boyceville school board voted to move forward with updating the weight room using referendum money.
“It fits the plan and fits within the budget that was in our facilities study,” said district administrator Nick Kaiser.
The phy ed teachers spoke to the board about the proposed updates and took them on a tour of the weight room at the board’s work session meeting held on March 5. According to the minutes from that meeting there was discussion of classroom needs, inclusivity of use for all students, staff and community, maintenance plan and replacement of equipment.
Kaiser said the project will involve getting the flooring and equipment up to date as well as the room as a whole. He said the teachers like the plan, the weight room gets a lot of use and after seeing what the bids are for other referendum projects, he’s comfortable adding in the updates.
After some discussion about time frames and logos, the board unanimously approved the project which is estimated to cost around $177,000.
The board also unanimously approved the creation and posting for a new reading teacher/interventionist position at the middle/high school. Kaiser said there is a need for extra help in the middle/high school especially in the area of English language arts.
“I think this position is definitely needed,” said Kaiser.
Reports
TCE principal Jerim DesJarlais told the board that students wrapped up Reading Week with a basketball themed assembly. He also updated the board on two math curriculums the school is piloting, preparations for administering the Forward Exam and the work being done to comply with Act 20.
He also reported that staff and students completed the SAEBRs (Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) assessment to identify those who are at risk for social-emotional behavior problems. The results of the assessment will be used to help determine whether students will benefit from additional support.
In her report to the board, special education director Rebecca Hanestad told the board about a trip that juniors and seniors with IEPs took to CVTC in Eau Claire. After the tour some of the students ended up applying to the tech school. She also spoke about this year’s ELC screening which was attended by 26 families.
Middle/high school principal Pat Gretzlock mentioned various activities that have taken place at the school over the past month including science olympiad, state wrestling, the musical and ACT and pre-ACT testing.
He noted that administering the ACT and pre-ACT tests is no small feat. Gretzlock thanked Teddi Humpal, food service director, Jacob Schoeder, district network administrator, Nancy Pustol, administrative assistant and all of the ACT room supervisors and proctors for all their hard work in making the testing days a success.
Kaiser reported that he’s been working on logistics for the referendum work that will be completed this summer. He attended a kick off meeting last week where he met with some of the contractors and they are starting to organize and schedule the projects.
“Our biggest thing now is logistical, when they can start, when they can get in the building, where we can put things,” said Kaiser.
